Music, B.A.

Music, B.A. Overview

Greenville University offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music (BA) with emphasis in voice, piano, instrumental or composition.

Those who pursue a B.A. in Music at Greenville find that they are well equipped for post-graduate life. The major includes everything a student needs to succeed in the professional music world; Music Theory, Aural Skills, Instrumental Methods, and Ensemble Leadership classes are all available to students within their first two years at the institution. This allows students time to truly develop proficiency in the material. There are three paths a student can take within the B.A. Music degree; the first is a performance-based study on a specific instrument, the second a composition focus, and the third a general studies degree.

The student-to-teacher ratio of most classes is fairly small, which leads to in-depth discussion and individualized learning. Finally, there are many diverse ensembles to get involved in on campus. The Greenville University Choir is an auditioned ensemble that specializes in sacred choral music. This year, the Choir will be celebrating its 90th Anniversary, and will be touring the northeast in the spring. On the other hand, Fusion is a relatively new ensemble that focuses mostly on commercial music. Their repertoire consists of music from artists like Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, Mark Ronson, Marvin Gaye, and much more. Interestingly, there are music students who are heavily involved in both the aforementioned ensembles.

Greenville’s B.A. in Music degree is an exceptional staging ground for a myriad of future opportunities. For some, it is a stepping-stone to a graduate degree in a very specific field such as ethnomusicology or choral conducting. For those with a focus in composition, there are prospects in the business world - whether it’s something as simple as composing jingles or as momentous as writing scores for upcoming video games and movies. Greenville offers a program that allows students to hone in on their true passions and immerse themselves in musical culture and study. (Braden Oestreich, ‘19)
