Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

4-week PD modules addressing grade level training:

Don't just 'address' standards! Aggressively engage with the underlying ideas and intent of the standards in various domains. We will ask ourselves the following questions about particular standards in the CCSSM:

  • Intent - What is meant by this standard?
  • Focus - How is this standard related to other content strands in the same grade level?
  • Coherence - How is this standard related to content development over multiple grade levels?
  • Rigor - How can the standards be taught effectively using the Standards of Mathematical Practice?

Modules will have the following elements:

  • Content - Exploring the Mathematics
  • Pedagogy - Exploring what is known about how children learn these concepts and the likely misconceptions and confusions they experience.
  • Practice - Exploring web resources (lesson ideas, assessment tasks, rubrics/record-keeping, and other resources) related to the target content, with special emphasis on how the Standards of Mathematical Practice are integrated.
  • Dialogue - Joining the conversation around the target content with other teachers across the United States teaching at your grade level.

The following modules are professional development units. The modules are fully online:

    May 27 - June 23, 2014:

    • CPU 510 B - Common Core Math in Kindergarten - Part B - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    • CPU 511 A - Common Core Math in 1st Grade - Part A - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    • CPU 512 A - Common Core Math in 2nd Grade - Part A - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    June 24 - July 21, 2014:

    • CPU 510 A - Common Core Math in Kindergarten - Part A - Counting and Cardinality

    • CPU 511 B - Common Core Math in 1st Grade - Part B - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    • CPU 512 A - Common Core Math for Second Grade Teachers - Part A - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

The following courses are for graduate credit and require an additional week of face-to-face instruction on the Greenville College Campus.

    Online portion: May 27-June 23, 2014; Face-to-face portion: June 24-June 27, 2014

    • CE 510 B - Common Core Math in Kindergarten - Part B - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    • CPU 511 A - Common Core Math in 1st Grade - Part A - Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    Quick Facts

Certificates are awarded for each CEU Non-Credit Course based on successful completion of minimum requirements. Upon completion, the participants will earn 2 Continuing Education Units (CEU) in Illinois, and teachers in other states may use their certificates to apply with their local school officials for consideration toward continuing education units in their home state..
