Online students are expected to have a thorough knowledge of their personal computer, its operating system, and basic knowledge of software and tools such as a word processor, e-mail, an Internet browser, and search engines.

Students in online courses should expect to login to their courses at least three times a week. Some courses require participating in live meetings and presentations with your instructor over the internet. Your program calendar specifies what evenings these will be held. Class sessions typically begin at 6 p.m. or later and generally last 60-90 minutes.

High-speed Internet access is required.

A minimum download speed of 1 Mbps and a 0.15Mbps minimum upload speed is recommended. One site you can use to check your internet speed is http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/.

Operating System

  • Windows 7 or greater
  • Mac OS X 10.7 or greater

Minimum Hardware Requirements

  • A personal computer or laptop purchased new within the last 2.5 years and loaded with the minimum software requirements (see below)
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 10 GB available data storage (On internal hard drive or external drive)
  • Headset, ear buds, or headphones
  • Microphone or headset

Minimum Software Requirements

  • Microsoft Office 2007 or higher, or a compatible office software suite such as Google Docs or OpenOffice, is recommended, which would encompass these minimum components:
    • A word processing program capable of saving files in .docx (Microsoft Word) format.
    • A spreadsheet program capable of saving files in .xlsx (Microsoft Excel) format
    • A presentation program capable of saving files in .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint) format
  • Web browser options: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. These are free downloadable programs.
    • It is likely that some course features will not function correctly in browsers other than Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari.
    • Browsers should be kept updated for optimal performance.

Learning Management System

Greenville College uses Brightspace by D2L as a course management system. You must first be enrolled in a course and assigned a Greenville College network user name and password to access D2L. 

D2L’s direct URL for Greenville College is https://learning.greenville.edu.

Tutorials are available 24/7 within D2L’s help feature. Additional training and support is also available by sending an email to onlinehelp@greenville.edu or by calling 618.664.6839 during regular business hours.

Students will be expected to know the basics of the D2L system before beginning their online courses. Online orientation is provided. Check with your Admissions Counselor for orientation information specific to your program.

E-mail

Students will be provided a Greenville College e-mail account through Gmail. All students are responsible for monitoring this e-mail account for important College correspondence, including messages from instructors. Students may choose to forward messages from this Gmail account to another personal email account if desired.
