BELLVILLE, Ill. – After tearing through first round play, Greenville College men’s tennis was ousted 5-1 by eventual SLIAC champion Principia in the semifinal match of the 2012 Friday-Saturday SLIAC Tournament.

“Principia was the best team our conference has seen in the 11 years I’ve coached,” stated head coach Brannon after the tough loss. “For us to have a shot at them at all, is quite an accomplishment for a team as young as ours. Our young guys now know what it takes.”

After blasting Fontbonne in a 5-0 sweep on Friday, GC got their chance at powerhouse Principa and gave the overwhelming favorite a scare. Greenville commenced the battle with a stellar 8-5 win at No. 2 Doubles, but No. 3 Doubles competition to provide an early 1-1 line. No. 1 Doubles was locked in a 6-6 tie, but eventually was dropped 8-6.

In individual action, No.’s 1, 5, and 6 singles looked promising for the Black & Orange, but the club would never get the chance.  PC beat No.’s 2, 3, and 4 in convincing fashion, and the 5-1 match was decided.  GC No. 1 and team captain Ian Wolf was headed for a 3rd set in his match, and No.’s 5 and 6 Singles were in the early stages of decision and were very close matches.

“Give Principa a lot of credit,” continued Brannon. “They got wins where they needed them and are a very talented and together club. I am very proud of our effort and our team has come a long way.”

In consolation action GC was again dealt the loss, as Webster slid past 7-2 in 3rd and 4th place play.
