GREENVILLE, Ill. – GC men’s tennis surrendered their fifth loss of the season on Tuesday night as the Gorloks of Webster University rallied from down 3-2 to hand Greenville the loss. WU used the final three singles matches to eke past the Panthers 5-4 under the lights of the Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex.
In relation to the close final team score, five singles matches in the contest were pushed to the decisive third set, with GC picking up only two individual victories. #1 and #2 singles competitors Joes Newlin and Ian Wolf dropped their respective matches in which each had promising starts. Newlin was capsized by Webster’s Agustin Villalba who trailed 5-2 going into the third. Villalba mounted a third set comeback to edge past 7-5 and serve Newlin the tough loss.
Taylor Dunnington, Jesse Shaw and Ryan Haas all picked up wins in the conference duel, claiming points for GC in #3, #4 and #5 doubles. Dunnington pulled out a third set victory behind 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 effort, Shaw rolled in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, and Haas clawed his way to a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win.
Doubles saw the tandem of Newlin and Wolf pick up the win 8-4, but the remaining two combinations both fell to Webster 8-6.
Much like Tuesday’s sour finish, GC tennis fell to Webster in a close decision in last years 2010 bout by way of a 5-4-comeback heartbreaker.
GC tennis, now 7-5 (1-2 SLIAC), will take the courts Saturday, April 9, in a double-dip against Eureka and Judson. GC is set to battle Eureka in a 9:00 am opener and will turn back around and face Judson at noon.
