Football Overtaken by Millikin, 50-17

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The GC Football team took to the field Saturday in Edwardsville in a battle against Millikin University. The Panthers played hard but could not hold off the Big Blue and lost the game 50-17.

The game started great for the Big Blue with a 54 yard kickoff return that lead to an 18 yard touchdown run by Millikin's QB, Matt Holmes. Greenville answered on their first possession with a 22 yard field goal by Josh Frewin, which made the score 3-6 Millikin. The Big Blue came back down the field with Holmes completing a 49 yard touchdown pass to Jake Palmer and Millikin's kicker, Austin Brettschneider adding the extra point. In the final seconds of the quarter, Immanuel Gamble ran three hards for a touchdown and Frewin scored the extra point. After the first quarter Greenville was only down three points with a score of 10-13.

In the second and third quarters, Millikin took control.  The Big Blue scored two touchdowns in the second, a run by Avery Aina and another catch by Palmer. They continued their scoring streak with three more touchdowns in the third quarter by Tyler Roush, Sonnie Rollins, and Erik Tobey.

The fourth quarter started with a 44 yard field goal from Millikin's Brettschneider. Greenville finally put some more points on the scoreboard in the final quarter when Brendan Chambers ran 1 yard for a touchdown,  but, , it was too little too late. The game ended with Greenville falling 17-50.

Junior, Cody Lopez, made 12 tackles for an impressive defensive effort. Kirk Pierce had 4 tackles and Cody Brumfield finished the game with a sack.

The Panthers look to improve their record when they travel to St. Scholastica on September 15.
