Greenville College Basketball Players Score High in Academic Rankings

Two recent reports indicate that when Greenville College Panthers step onto the basketball court, they bring far more than skillful play to the game – they bring smarts.

A report issued by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) ranked the Greenville College women’s basketball team among the nation’s best academically during the 2012-13 school year. The Lady Panthers held the third best grade point average in NCAA Division III and were named to the WBCA’s Honor Roll. Coach Roy Mulholland’s team achieved a cumulative team grade point average of 3.569, ranking third nationwide behind Gustavus Adolphus College (3.600) and Emerson College (3.571). The Lady Panthers were one of two teams from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) to place among Division III’s top ten teams academically. Westminster, the league’s regular season and tournament champion, ranked fifth.

Seven players from GC’s men’s basketball program earned spots on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for their excellence in the classroom. GC’s players comprised half of the SLIAC players to gain recognition. The honorees include juniors Tyler Mitchell and Alex Mumphard, and seniors Simon Martin, Kyle Martin, Ben Giertz, Jordan Smith and Dan Mays. The Panthers also received the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, which is based on grade point average.

Men’s basketball coach George Barber reports that in addition to receiving recognition for good grades, his team earned the SLIAC 2012-13 Sportsmanship Award, making it the team’s sixth Sportsmanship Award in six years.
