The Greenville College men's tennis team participated in the SLIAC individual tennis tournament this weekend. The event was held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park of St. Louis, Mo. The GC men were looking to gear up for the conference team tournament that will be held next weekend by competing in an individual format for individual conference awards. There were six different flights for singles, and three flights for doubles.
Joe Newlin and Ian Wolf headed the list of award winners by being the first #1 doubles team in Greenville College history to win the tournament and be named to the SLIAC first team all conference. After entering the tournament with a bye as the #1 seed, they easily defeated Principia's #1 team by a score of 8-2 in the semifinals. In the finals they proved to be too much for the #1 doubles team from Westminster, leading from start to finish, and winning by the score of 8-4.
Honorable mention awards went to Joe Newlin at #1 singles and Jesse Shaw at #4 singles. Also earning an honorable mention award was the #2 doubles team of Jesse Shaw and Taylor Dunnington. The doubles team of Todd Ganton and Brent Wiedman had a very good showing as well. They upset Principia in the semifinals, before losing in the finals at #3 doubles to Westminster.
The Panthers will compete in the SLIAC conference team championship on Saturday, April 24, at the Webster Groves Recreation Complex in St. Louis. They will open by playing Webster in one semifinal at 9 a.m., while Westminster will be playing Principia in the other. The winners will advance to the championship match at 2 p.m. Greenville enters the tournament as the #3 seed against second-seed Webster. GC is looking to avenge a 5-4 defeat at the hands of Webster on April 11.
