There is just one word to describe the Greenville College Women’s Soccer team this year: determined.
Last season, the Lady Panthers finished 4th in the SLIAC, with a regular season record of 10-9-1 and a 5-3 record in Conference. In post-season play, GC beat SLIAC frontrunner, Principia College for the first time in school history to head to the Finals, where they fell to Webster University in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss. After losing in the SLIAC Finals the last three years, the women are prepared to taste victory this season.
The Panthers return eight seniors with a drive to make history at GC. In addition to the returning players, the team brought in nine new freshmen that will undoubtedly add to the depth of the squad.
Head coach, Jeff Wardlaw is in his ninth season at Greenville and 2013 marks his third year as head coach of the women’s team.
“I am really excited about this group as a whole,” Coach Wardlaw explained. “It is a very upper class dominated team but the overall make up of the team is all around solid young ladies and from a coaches standpoint that excites me.
The team has been working hard in preseason and is ready to start their season off right.
“There is a willingness and understanding of what it means to be an NCAA athlete and the pressure and standard that we expect is clear,” Wardlaw said.
As for the post-season expectation for the women, Coach Wardlaw recognizes the importance of hard work and determination.
“We will be competitive, but it’s always difficult to get back to the tournament when we have had so much success before. It will be interesting to see how we deal with a lengthy stressful season especially when we get into October.”
The ladies kick off their 2013 season on Saturday, August 31 as they take on Trinity International in Deerfield, Ill. at 1:00pm.
