HANNIBAL, Mo. – GC softball suffered only their second series sweep of 2012 on Wednesday as the squad ran into a 7-1, 10-0 ousting by NAIA DI Hannibal Lagrange University.
Greenville struggled in the road affair, putting together only nine hits to combine for one run in the twinbill. The lack of run support hurt the Panther starters and offered few chances against a powerful Hannibal squad.
Junior Kachina Hudson started game one in the circle for the host Lady Trojans and limited the Panthers to only one hit in five innings. Hudson struck out three on her way to her fourth shutout of the season and 17th complete game. The Lady Trojans closed out the first game early as it used the run rule to finish off Greenville in the fifth. Hannibal-LaGrange scored 10 runs on 13 hits to cruise to its 19th win of the season.
Freshman Jessica Laubecher was charged the loss on the mound for the Black & Orange in the 10-0 opener. Laubecher dealt four full innings while surrendering seven earned on 11 hits.
Game two was as equally frustrating for the road club, as the Lady Trojans again raced out to debilitating, adding one tally in the fourth and six runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 advantage. The Lady Panthers scored their lone run of the day in the seventh after leadoff hitter Laubecher came away with a double to deep right center, advanced to third on a stolen base and came home on a ground out to first.
Stepping in for an injured Angela Sheets, sophomore utility specialist Mattie Fairchild was at the helm for the Panthers. Fairchild tossed four innings and was tagged for five earned on six hits in the loss. Laubecher relieved her in the fifth and faced eight batters while allowing only two hits.
Greenville College softball will return home on Saturday, April 21 for GC softball Senior Day. The Panthers will square off with SLIAC foe Westminster at 12:00 and 2:00 at Lady Panther field, with Senior Day ceremonies taking place during intermission.
