Men’s Tennis, Wolf Look to Continue Winning Ways in ‘12

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Four-year letterwinner Ian Wolf will lead a reloading squad into another competitive season and aim to build on the recent success of the program in 2012.

GC Men’s Tennis s comes off of its best season in the last decade, finishing the ’11 season with a mark of 11 wins and 6 losses, with four of their losses being by scores of 5-4.   Gone from the 2010-2011 squad are the 1, 3, and 4 singles players, including Joe Newlin, the team MVP.  Newlin posted a record of 22-2 at 1 doubles with teammate Ian Wolf.   He also posted a record of 19-4 at 1 singles.

“We were very close to finishing with a 15-2 record last year,” commented head coach Brett Brannon.  “As a coach, I just wasn’t able to get us over the hump in close matches.”

Fortunately for Coach Brannon, he still has a proven winner and leader to take over the top spot in senior captain Wolf.  The Greenville native finished last season with a record of 18-5 at #2 singles, and will be anchoring a lineup filled with several newcomers.

“Ian is everything you look for in a player,” remarked Brannon.  “He really knows how to compete, and you know that every time he steps on the court, he is going to give everything he has, both mentally and physically.”

Joining Wolf is varsity letterwinners Todd Ganton, Jonathan Allen, Michael Read, and Ryan Haas. These returners will provide the leadership that is so important to a young and inexperienced team.

The 2012 team will rely heavily on contributions from freshman. At least three of the top six singles spots will be occupied by rookies, but talent is in great supply.

“We have a great group of freshman and first-year guys, and I’m really excited about the talent that they are bringing to our team,” stated Brannon  “Its probably the most talented and deep class of freshman that I’ve ever had and we have a very bright future in front of us with this group.” Newcomers include Jordan Tingle, Drew Herlein, Alex Dowley, Demetrius Bush, Reid Ganton, Jon Wilson, Ryan Mulholland, and Evan Gregory.

GC men’s tennis will first take to the courts on February 10-11 as they kick of 2012 by taking part in the highly-competitive two-day Principia College Invitational held on the campus of Principia College in Elsah, Ill.
