ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The women's basketball team was riding a five-game winning streak and one of the best starts in school history going into Tuesday's game, but Augustana College proved to be too much for the Lady Panthers in Rock Island.
From tipoff, Augustana (2-5) gained control and never looked back, shooting nearly 40 percent from the field while netting 33 percent of their three-point attempts. Molly Etheridge (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) of Augustana led all scorers in first half action with eight points and helped the Vikings to a 27-21 lead over the Panthers.
Greenville (5-1) had its best run of the evening in the opening minutes of the second half, using a 7-0 run to close Augustana's lead to 33-32 at the 15:17 mark. This was as close as the Panthers would get the rest of the way with a 9-0 stretch from the Vikings giving the home team some breathing room at 42-32.
Augustana would eventually seal the victory with a variety of scoring contributors and handed the Lady Panthers their first loss of the season 56-69.
“Among other things, we just weren’t hitting our shots,” said head coach Roy Mulholland. “I think we learned some things about ourselves though, and we should be able to bounce back and go right back to work in practice.”
The Panthers were led by sophomore shooting guard Laura Hobbie (Vandalia, Ill./Vandalia) who dropped in 14 points to go along with her season high eight rebounds. Senior Stacey Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) also turned in a nice performance going 4-for-6 from three-point land to post 12 points, four assists, and four boards.
Senior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) led the way for the Vikings tallying a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Greenville will next travel to Clinton, Ind., to take on St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday, Dec. 11.
