TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Greenville Softball earned its first win of the 2011 season Wednesday as they shelled Fisher 11-2 in the opening game of the final day of the spring break road trip. GC would follow with a 4-3 heartbreaking loss to Minnesota Crookston in the capper.
In the opener, Greenville jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings behind a clutch three RBI double by junior Brya Irving. The Lady Panthers would add three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the seventh to close the game 11-2.
Offensively GC got help from a number of players in the win. Freshman catcher Sarah Gerig slapped three hits on five attempts with two RBI and a run scored to help the club, and newcomer Ashley Sharp also turned in a nice effort going two-for-four at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
On the mound, Angela Sheets notched the win dealing four innings while allowing zero hits, zero runs, and striking out three.
The final game of the road trip ended in heartbreak for the Lady Panthers. In a rematch of Monday’s 6-3 loss to Minnesota Crookston, GC’s performance was enough to take them down to final moments.
Through four innings Greenville trailed by only one run thanks to a two RBI homer slugged by GC first baseman Rachel Brewer. In the sixth inning, still trailing 4-3, Greenville had two runners in scoring position and failed to convert. The game-tying runner, Lesley Holloway, was thrown out at home to give the edge to Minnesota 4-3.
Greenville pitcher Lindsey Schuberth was dealt the loss going six innings with two earned on ten hits.
Softball ended their 2011 spring break road trip 1-7 and move to 1-10 overall on the season. GC will next hit the diamond Friday, March 25, as they take on MacMurray.
