Objectives for the Art Major

1. Art graduates are aesthetically sensitive and critical.
2. Art graduates know art historical styles, media, techniques and themes from a variety of cultures.
3. Art graduates have a basic understanding of concepts
and issues relevant to current art practice.
4. Art graduates demonstrate sustained, independent research in a chosen area of specialization on a professional level.
5. Art graduates articulate personal and archetypal (social,
psychological, religious, physical, etc.) themes through self-
generated modes of visual communication.
6. Art graduates are prepared for admission to Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree programs in the Visual Arts.

Major Requirements

Forty credits, eight of which must be upper division. Art majors are required to submit a portfolio of their work and have a conference with the art faculty after completion of the basic 20 credit course sequence or its equivalent (ART 111, 112, 113, 211, and 251). At the conclusion of the review, the student may either be admitted as an art major, not admitted, or in certain cases, granted one probationary semester at the end of which work would be considered for a second time. All majors will organize and hang a senior exhibition of their work (or Art Education majors may do a senior project) which must meet the approval of the art faculty.

111 Design (Four Credits)
A study of the basic principles and elements
of two-dimensional form and composition.
Alternate discussion and projects designed
to acquaint the student with material and
techniques in the plastic arts. 4 double periods.
(Offered fall semester.)

112 Sculpture (Four Credits)
A study of the elements of three-dimensional
form. Working with a variety of materials
using processes such as construction/fabrication
and mold making/casting. 4 double periods.
No prerequisite. (Offered spring semester.)

113 Drawing I (Four Credits)
Studio work in beginning drawing from still
life and nature. Basic experiences with form
description using a wide range of media. 4
double periods. (Offered fall semester of odd
calendar years.)

210 Art Education I (Two or Four Credits)
Laboratory work designed to give the student
an acquaintance with a wide range of projects
usable in public schools. Discussion of aim
and methods of art instruction in public schools.
(Offered fall semester.)

211 Painting I (Four Credits)
Composition in acrylics with emphasis on
structuring of two-dimensional form and
space. Primary resources are still life and nature.
Prerequisite: ART111 and 113 or instructors permission.
(Offered fall semester.)

217 Crafts (Two or Four Credits)
Studio work is basic crafts both traditional and
contemporary. Work based on design principles
as applied to various media.
Prerequisite: ART 211 or permission of
instructor. (Offered fall semester of even
calendar years.)

251 Art History: Introduction and Survey (Four Credits)
The first seven weeks of the course are intended
as an introductory study of artists, their ideas,
and styles, with an emphasis upon the variety of
media and styles in the history of art. The second
seven weeks consists of a beginning survey of
art historical movements commencing with
Western painting, sculpture, and architecture
from prehistoric times through the Aegean and
Greek periods. (Offered fall semester of odd
calendar years.)

252 Art History: Survey II (Four Credits)
Beginning with Rome and its Empire, the painting,
sculpture, and architecture since the time of
Christ is considered in this survey. The Medieval,
Renaissance, and Baroque periods are studied in
depth, along with a brief overview of the nineteenth
and twentieth centuries. Socioeconomic, cultural,
and religious influences are considered. (Offered
spring semester of even calendar years.)

300 Drawing II (Four Credits)
Study of drawing as representation, expression,
and composition. Emphasis on drawing of the figure
form the posed model using brush, pen, charcoal,
etc. 4 double periods.
Prerequisite: ART 111 and 113. (Offered
fall semester of even calendar years.)

301 Graphic Design (Four Credits)
Problems in lettering, layout and graphic design.
Application of creative design to the fields of
advertising and product design. 4 double periods.
Prerequisite: ART 111 and 113. (Offered fall
semester of even calendar years.)

308 Painting II (Four Credits)
Advanced problems involving creative experiments
with various painting media. The student is
encouraged to develop an individual approach to
contemporary painting problems. 4 double periods.
Prerequisite: ART 211. (Offered fall semester.)

310 Ceramics I (Four Credits)
A study of three-dimensional form in pottery.
Pottery design and construction using coil, slab,
casting, and wheel throwing methods. Experimental
glazing and firing techniques are explored. 4 double
periods.
No prerequisite. (Offered fall semester.)

312 Sculpture II (Four Credits)
Continued development of sculptural concepts with
emphasis on creative and imaginative resolution.
Interdisciplinary exploration as preparation for
further advanced study. 4 double periods.
Prerequisite: Art 112. (Offered Spring semester.)

320 Ceramics II (Four Credits)
A continuation of the investigations of the introductory
course with emphasis on the development of personal
expression in clay media and glazing technique. 4 double periods.
Prerequisite: Art 310 (Offered fall semester)

350 Art Education II
Experiments in drawing, painting, and three-dimensional
materials. Discussion and study of curriculum, aims, and
philosophy of art in the secondary school, and clinical
experiences.
Prerequisite: ART 210. (Offered spring semester
of even calendar years.)

352 Art History: The Nineteenth Century (Two Credits)
A study of European art and architectural movements
from Neoclassicism thought, Impressionism, Symbolism,
and the Art Nouveau.
Prerequisite: ART 251 and 252, or HUM 211, or
permission of the instructor. (Offered spring semester
of even calendar years.)

353 Art History: The Twentieth Century (Two Credits)
Problems in art and architecture of the past seven decades
beginning with Expressionism and Cubism and continuing
through the most recent developments.
Prerequisite: ART 251 and 252, or HUM 211, or
permission of the instructor. (Offered fall semester
of even calendar years.)

354 Art History: American Art(Two Credits)
An examination of the architecture, painting, sculpture
and experimental forms which have made significant
contributions to the development of the visual arts
in the United States from colonial times to the present
Attention will be given to European influence and to the
art of Latin and Native America.
No prerequisite. May fulfill the two credit visual art
component of the General Education, Hum 211 requirement.
Offered fall semester of odd numbered years.

390 Independent Studio (Variable Credit)
Provides time and space for the student who has
completed at least the second level in any of the areas
of specialization. The student works independently,
approximately 12 hours per week. Work time is punctuated
by weekly, individual, one half hour meetings with the
instructor and by biweekly critiques with other students
in Independent and Advanced studio classes. The main goal
of the course is the achievement of a personal expression
which indicates clear conceptual development as evidenced
in a body of work and a written statement. Students may
take as many hours of Independent Studio as is necessary
to complete the major requirements or to fulfill personal
objectives.
Prerequisite: any second level studio course
(Art 301, Art 308, Art 312, Art 320, Art 300) or permission
of the art department head. Offered every semester.

400 Advanced Studio (Four Credits)
Advanced studio which allows the qualified student to
select his medium and explore it more intensively. The
culmination of this semester will be an exhibition
prepared by the student. A sufficient number of juried
works will be required for a complete show in the
college art gallery. May be repeated for a total of
eight hours.
Prerequisite: Permission of the department.
(Offered every semester.)

199, 399 Open-Titled Course (One to Four Credits)
This course provides the channel for experimental
and exploratory study. It may be used to develop or
extend coursed regularly offered. This course also
may be used for individual academic pursuits not
listed in the regularly developed sequence of course
offerings. A breadth of alternatives are provided for,
such as, Independent Study, Individual Readings,
Individual Research, Field Experience, and its offering
is contingent upon professional or student request.

405 Internship
In this course the student applies theories and skills
learned in the major. Each experience should include
significant learning opportunities related to the
student's major field. Forty to sixty hours of work
experience is required for each credit awarded. A
learning experience summary paper following
departmental guidelines is required as well as a
final interview with the academic supervisor. A
maximum of twelve credits may be applied to
the degree.
Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing with
a 2.0 GPA, 18 semester credits completed in the
field and departmental approval.
