Course of Study
The History and Political Science Department at
Greenville College enables our students to understand ideas and
draw conclusions from the experience of the past that will allow
them to participate effectively, ethically, and redemptively in
the corporate life of the communities in which they live.
The major is arranged to provide a history and political science
student with an emphasis in either history or political science.
All students are required to take courses in western civilization,
American history or government, world cultures or comparative politics,
and courses in historical methods and historiography as foundations
of their course of study.
Historians ought to be precise, faithful,
and unprejudiced; and neither interest nor fear, hatred nor affection,
should make them swerve from the way of truth.
--Cervantes, Don Quixote
Mission Statement
The History Department at Greenville College prepares
students for redemptive service to society through careers in Academic,
Business, Education, and Government professions.
An Expanded Classroom
Students at Greenville are encouraged to create
experiential learning courses by participating in internships. Some
examples of internship opportunities include:
- employment in local historical societies and museums
- employment in city and county government
- employment in a local US Congressional office
- employment in the federal government through the CCCU Washington
Semester Program
Phi Alpha Theta
Students interested in the study of History are
invited to join the Greenville College chapter of Phi Alpha Theta.
This student led club organizes field trips to sites of historical
interest, invites guest speakers to campus, prepares presentations
at the local historical society, and creates fellowship opportunities
on and off campus for students interested in the profession of history.
Men make history, and not the other way around.
In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress
occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to
change things for the better.
--Harry S. Truman
