Campus Master Plan
Key Components
Student
Enrollment
During the fall of 2000 the total head count was 954 (traditional
students). FTE (full time equivalent) was 930. The goal for the
NMC is 1000 FTE by 2003. The 15-year master plan makes the assumption
of 1200 students by 2016.
Student Housing
Being a residential campus, on the average 75% of the students
live in campus housing. As of the fall of 2000, our current residential
student capacity was 672. However, because of a strong fall enrollment,
we had 716 in residence. As of September 2001, our current capacity
will increase to 735.
The student housing committee developed a philosophy of three different
types of living: 1) Traditional - The dormitories which fall under
this classification are Burritt, Dallas, Holtwick, Jansen, and Joy.
This type of dormitory is designed more for the freshmen and sophomore
level student; 2) Intermediate - These residences include Tenney,
Kinney, and College Avenue Student Housing. For the most part, these
facilities serve sophomore - senior students; 3) Apartment - Tower
Apartments fall under this classification. Apartment style living
is for upper division students, and it is planned that apartments
will replace the traditional "houses" Greenville College
has used in the past.
After the completed construction of the College Avenue housing,
we will only need 250 beds to achieve the residential goal of 1000
beds. Future sites for housing have been identified on the campus
plan plat. Priority areas are as follows: 1) Area 3 at the corner
of Beaumont and Elm; 2) Area 2 behind Tenney and Kinney; 3) Area
1 north of Holtwick; 4) Area 4 east side of Elm; and 5) finally,
Area 6 in conjunction with the possible acquisition of Almira Manor.
Classroom Space
Currently, the College has 25 classrooms with a total of
880 chairs. The greatest need for classroom space is for large classrooms
which seat more than 60 students. The other area of need is for
additional lab space and studios for music and art. The art studio
space will be addressed with the renovation of the Maves Art Center
facility. Currently, music has 5 practice rooms for 155 majors.
The need for music studio/practice rooms is the highest priority
for "academic space."
Free Methodist Church
The College has an opportunity to acquire the Greenville
Free Methodist Church. In January, a space utilization and program
study took place to examine the feasibility of moving the Music
Department to the church. The size of the facility is over 37,000
square feet with 23 classrooms and offices. The study concluded
that the church would be an excellent fit for the Music Department.
The cost of purchasing the building and renovating it would be half
of the cost of a new music facility.
Music would occupy the entire facility, with the exception of Luzader
Chapel, which would stay in its current configuration. The sanctuary
would be used as a chapel until a new chapel could be built, and
then it would serve as a fine arts auditorium. By moving music to
the church, it would open up Marston and LaDue to serve as a classroom
building. Renovation and deferred maintenance issues would need
to be addressed in the facility. Cost for acquisition and renovation
is estimated at $2.5 million.
Future Chapel/Auditorium
The
College has always made an intentional commitment to worship together
as a campus body on a regular basis. Currently, the chapel can only
seat 650 with folding chairs. Since we have mandatory chapel, it
has created some difficult situations to seat our student body and
faculty. The master plan committee has concluded we need a new facility
which can seat 1200-1500 people. The proposed additions would be
a new auditorium capable of seating 1200-1500 people, and a building
to connect the music center and the new auditorium. The lower level
of the connecting building would house the current black room. Estimated
costs for these facilities is $4.5 million.
