Annual Alumni Ski/Snowboard Trip

January 3-6, 2002

Don’t pass up this opportunity to take advantage of some of the most affordable ski prices and fellowship with Greenville College alumni! If you’ve never skied, Monarch is a great place to learn. Three days at Monarch Ski Lodge in Colorado will become the highlight of your year.

2001 Skip TripThe alumni ski/snowboard trip is scheduled for January 3, 4, 5, and 6, 2002. One person (sharing a room with 3 friends can ski/snowboard for 3 days for about $260 dollars including room, lift ticket, ski rental and food. A family of four with kids under 18 can enjoy this great time for less than $900. Bring your own ski equipment and save $11 a day. Getting to Monarch and home again is additional, but we've found great rates for flying in years past. Also, a van(s) will leave from Greenville College to Monarch for those interested.

The plan is to arrive at Monarch on Thursday morning on the 3rd and ski/snowboard/snowmobile all of Thursday, Friday and Saturday at your leisure. The van will leave Monarch at 6 AM on Sunday the 6th and return to Greenville at 10 PM.

Monarch Mountain LogoMonarch Ski Lodge is located west of Pueblo on highway 50. It is a part of the San Isabel National Forest and provides fantastic Rocky Mountain terrain. They never have to make their own snow at Monarch! The top of the ski runs takes you to the continental divide and begins your skiing experience at about 12,000 feet. The vertical drop at Monarch is just under 1,200 feet and the lifts can carry 6000 skiers per hour.Traditionally, we’ve chosen this particular weekend because it has been one of the lightest attended weekends of the year for Monarch. We enjoy the fact that we rarely have to wait in line to get back on the lift, get a table in the restaurant or find a place in the hot tub.

The past two years, some alumni enjoyed a snowmobile trip as an alternative to skiing. You can go on a 2 hour trip, a day trip, or even a moonlight trip up the old railroad grade through the national forest. Rates start at about $33, and you’ll find that it doesn’t cost much more than your lift ticket and ski rental for a day. To complete your day, you could checkout the wonderful shopping opportunities in Salida or relax in front of the fireplace at the lodge with hot chocolate and a good book.

A typical day starts with breakfast at the lodge around 7:45 AM and the van leaving for the 10-minute trip to the slopes at 8:00 AM. The lifts begin moving at 9 AM. We divide into groups of equal abilities and stay together on appropriate runs. Some may want to take a 2-hour group lesson given by the professionals at Monarch for less than $25, or some may wish to put their kids in the all day ski school for the same price (includes lunch). We gather for lunch and share stories from the morning at 11:45 AM and then, we ski until the lifts close at 4 PM. (Rides back to the lodge are available during the afternoon.) In the evening, we eat dinner at the lodge and spend time relaxing in the hot tub or pool, playing games, watching movies, or gathering for fellowship. One of the nights we head into the town of Salida and enjoy dinner at one of the quaint restaurants.

The alumni office will provide a shuttle that will make two trips each day at designated times from the Colorado Springs airport. You may want to rent a car for greater flexibility.

The alumni office will pay the full charges required in advance. A non-refundable $25 per person down payment is required to secure your place by the end of November 2001. Your remaining costs will be collected at Monarch. We accept major credit cards and checks can be made out to Greenville College.

Please check back for more information on free shuttle service to and from the Colorado Springs airport.
