Summary of Qualifications:

I have lived 14 years in Africa; including a total of 6 years working as project director for extension and natural resource related agricultural development in Rwanda. Since January of 1992 I have been a professor of biology at Greenville College; this includes short-term appointments at two institutes for environmental studies teaching courses in global resource issues. I have worked with state environmental programs in Illinois and have done EPA consulting in other regions of the U.S.A. My training and experiences are multidisciplinary in nature with a focus on food production and sustainable resource use. My doctoral studies from Auburn University focused on fish culture but with a strong multidisciplinary emphasis in international development. I am multilingual and have lived in France, Kenya, Burundi, and Rwanda. I have a long-term interest in education dealing with international issues, especially those related to the human interface with global natural resources and international development.

Professional experience

1992 - current

Associate Professor of biology at Greenville College. Courses include ecology, issues in global development, East African wildlife issues, and vertebrate natural history.

Agricultural Development Advisor for Free Methodist Church. I have been asked to direct the startup of an international agricultural program for a new Christian humanitarian NGO.

Assistant Professor of biology at the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies. Developed and taught Global Development and Ecological Sustainability.

1987 - 1992

Agricultural Advisor with the Union of Baptist Churches of Rwanda. Responsibilities included Country Disaster and Relief Response Coordinator and Agricultural Project Director with the Union Des Eglise Baptiste du Rwanda.

Professor of environmental studies at Baylor University. While on a nine month furlough (89-90) I team-taught agricultural ecology at the Institute for Environmental Studies.

1970 - 1974

High school teacher under Africa Inland Mission at Rift Valley Academy in Kenya.

1981-1984

Graduate research assistant in the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures, Auburn University.

1979 - 1980

On-call biologist for Lawler, Matusky and Skelly Engineers. Worked on pre-impact evaluation project of a river prior to start-up of atomic power plant in Midland, Michigan.

1977-1978

Graduate teaching assistant for the biology department, Central Michigan University

Short-term experience

1997

Director of Carlyle Lake Watershed Resource Inventory for ecosystem partnership program of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources under the auspices of the Greenville College Institute for Environmental Studies.

1995

NEPA environmental assessment for the Richmond International Airport. Served on a team writing the impact statement and carried out wildlife survey fieldwork.

Farm pond fish survey for ponds in Bond County. I worked with the District Fisheries Biologist in a project to evaluate owner perceptions and status of fish populations in farm ponds.

Education

1985 -Ph.D., Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures, Auburn University. Focus: fish culture, water management and international agricultural development.

1986 –Non-degree study at Southern Baptist Seminary (20 semester hours) in fulfillment of SBC mission board requirements.

1981 -M.A., Biology Department, Central Michigan University. Focus: aquatic ecology.

1974 -B.A., Greenville College. Majors in biology and secondary education.

Languages

French –studied at the Institut des Etudes Francaise de Touraine in Tours France completing a third level degree (troisieme niveau).

Kinyarwanda -completed level three in a language training program in Rwanda and worked in the language on a daily basis for five years.
