FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2002

All Freshman and Transfer Student Orientation Begins

  • 6:00 am to 11:30 am - Pre-Season Athletic Practice
    (Times to be determined by specific coaches)

  • 8:00 am to 1:15 pm - Music Placement Exams (LaDue Music Center)

    Sign up for exams in music office (1st floor LaDue) before completing residence hall check-in.

    Piano Placement exams - 1st floor LaDue
    Voice Placement exams - 2nd floor LaDue
    Choral Auditions - Rm 104 LaDue
    Music Theory exam for all music majors and minors - 1st LaDue, Band Room (8:00 am-10:00 am)

    If you plan to major or minor in music, you must participate in the music theory and piano placement exams. Test results will be used to identify appropriate music theory and class level for you. If you plan to study applied voice or applied piano you must take the respective placement exam. If you would like to audition to join the Greenville College Chorale or Choir you must complete a choral audition in Rm 104 LaDue.

  • 8:00 am to 1:30 pm - Welcome Tent
    Located in the center of campus next to Hogue Hall, the Welcome Tent is where you will find refreshments, directions, answers to your questions, and your welcome packet. You will also receive meal tickets for parents planning on eating with us for lunch and dinner.

  • 8:00 am to 1:00 pm - Residence Hall Check-In
    Residence halls open for all new students, including transfers. Please report to the hall, which you have been assigned. Student Development will be present to help you check in.

    A "Baggage Brigade" will be ready and waiting to help you with your luggage!

  • 9:00 am to 9:00 pm - Family Christian Store
    Browse through the shirts, sweatshirts, books, tapes, CDs, and other Greenville College items. Textbooks available for sale, class schedule required.

  • 9:30 am to 12:30 pm - ACT Testing (Library, Studio A)
    Required of all students who have not taken the ACT or SAT.

  • 11:30 am to 3:00 pm - Transfer Student Advisement/Enrollment

    We value our transfer students greatly! We want to welcome you to campus with a luncheon in which you can meet and talk with faculty in your chosen major. After lunch, you can work to finalize your Fall, Interterm and Spring schedules and address concerns you have about getting settled into the GC community.

      Location: Marston Hall, Room 101

    Parents of transfer students: Lunch is available in the Armington Center Dining Commons. Complementary tickets are in the welcome packet.

  • 11:30 am to 1:30 pm - Lunch (Armington Center)
    No cost to new students and parents. Parents must present their complementary meal ticket from their welcome packet. Other guests will be charged $4.50.

  • 1:15 pm to 2:00 pm - Parents' Orientation (Free Methodist Church)
    Meet the president, Dr. V. James Mannoia, Jr., and hear his vision for a transforming education in the liberating arts and sciences.

  • 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm - First Session with COR 101 Groups (See postings for assigned rooms)
    This is the beginning of your COR 101 experience. You will meet your COR 101 faculty instructor/advisor and his/her teaching assistant.

  • 2:00 pm to 2:50 pm - Parents' Question and Answer Time (Free Methodist Church)
    Join us for this informal time with select members of the faculty and administration who will explain their roles and answer questions.

  • 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm - Parents Meet with COR 101 Instructors (See postings for assigned rooms)

  • 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm - New Student Convocation (LaDue Auditorium)
    This session will serve as the first formal gathering of the new freshmen and transfers. Vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Karen Longman, and dean of students, Norman Hall, will preside.

  • 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm "Crossing the Threshold" & "Planting the Ivy" (Students gather in front of Hogue Hall. Parents gather on Scott Field. Faculty line the rear steps of Hogue Hall in regalia)
    Greenville College President Dr. V. James Mannoia privately addresses new students from the steps of Hogue Hall. In this celebration of beginnings, freshmen glimpse the fulfillment of hopes and opportunities available to them at Greenville College, celebrating the life of the mind.

  • 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm Family "Barbecue" Picnic (Scott Field)
    Giant family meal on Scott Field. Free to students and their parents; must present meal tickets. Other guests will be charged $5.50.

  • 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm - Student Association Coffee House Part I (Library Steps)
    Student Association will introduce this year's officers while serving up favorite beverages and light entertainment.

  • 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm - Covenant/Communion Service (Crum Recreation Center)
    During the important transition to college, we realize the interdependence of student, family, and college in effectively shaping the student's life. Join together in this time of covenant and worship as our president leads us in a communion service committing ourselves to one another before God.

  • 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm - Coffee House Part II (Library Steps)
    Student Association & Campus Activities Board, led by Student Body President, Ms. Meredith McDaniels, will provide music, entertainment, gourmet coffee and some live music.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 31, 2002

  • 6:00 am to 8:00 am - Pre-Season Athletic Practice
    (Times to be determined by specific coaches)

  • 7:30 am to 9:00 am - Breakfast (Armington Center)

  • 8:00 am to 9:00 am - Student Financial Services Session (LaDue Auditorium)
    Mandatory meeting for all student loan borrowers.
    This session will meet the federal requirement of a "Student Loan Entrance Interview" for all borrowers of federal student loans. Loan proceeds will not be disbursed to your account until you have participated in this session and completed necessary documents. Come prepared with a pencil or pen.

  • 9:00 am to 4:00 pm - COR 101 Groups Meet for Enrollment (meet in locations assigned to core groups for initial sessions)
    Meet with your COR 101 faculty advisor to complete the enrollment process. Faculty group leaders will be with you to help answer any questions you may have.

  • 9:00 am to 4:00 pm - Assessment (Snyder Hall room 103, 104, 120)
    Mandatory testing for all freshmen. Students will participate in testing with their COR 101 group opposite scheduled enrollment time.

  • 10:30 am to 10:00 pm - Visitor Optional Activities
    • Library - Open Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm.
    • Bock Museum - Open Saturday from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm.
    • Jo's Java - Open Friday from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. Closing hours are flexible.
    • Family Christian Store - Open Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
    • Campus Tour - 1:30 pm (Meet in lower Armington)

  • 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm - Lunch (Armington Center)
    Students must present ID card. Cost to guests is $4.50 per person.

  • 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm - Meeting for PASS Students (Academic Enrichment Center in the Library)

  • 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm - Language Testing (Snyder 104)
    ALL incoming B.A. and B.S. students (freshmen and transfers who have not taken one of the foreign language exams administered on the Greenville campus this summer) MUST attend this testing session in order to take the foreign language placement exam or (at this designated time) sign a waiver stating that: (a) foreign language instruction was received in a language other than Spanish or French, or (b) no foreign language instruction has ever been received.

  • 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm - Pre-Season Athletic Practice

  • 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm - Dinner (Armington Center)
    Students must present ID card. Cost to guests is $5.50 per person.

  • 9:00 pm - Residence Life Meeting (LaDue Auditorium)
    Mandatory for all resident students.
    Dean Norman Hall, Director of Residence Life Pedro Valentin, and the Student Development Staff will share things you need to know to have a rewarding experience living on campus.

  • 11:00 pm to 12:00 am - Freshman Mugging (on the Mall in front of Snyder Hall)
    Come and join in on the fun as Campus Activities Board and the Alumni Office offer free ice cream and soda in your own Greenville College Mug.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2002

  • 7:30 am to 9:00 am - Light Breakfast (Armington Center)
    Students present ID card.

  • 9:00 am to 12:00 pm - Morning Worship (Church of Your Choice)
    Look in your welcome packet and find literature describing our local churches and their worship times.

  • 11:30 am to 1:30 pm - Sunday Brunch (Armington Center)
    For many years Greenville College Food Service has offered a wonderful full course brunch following church services. This is a great time to visit, relax, and get to know each other. We hope you will join us in fun and fellowship. Students present ID card.

  • 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm - Free Time
    This time is designed for you to rest, visit with your new friends, and say good-byes to friends and family traveling home ... or perhaps check out the Ultimate Frisbee game on Scott Field.

  • 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm COR 101 Group (Meet with your faculty leader at your pre-assigned location)

  • 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm - Departmental Dinners (Meet your COR 101 class on Scott Field then walk to faculty homes)

  • 9:00 pm - Pre-Service Learning Project Event (Library Steps)

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2002

  • 6:00 am to 8:00 am Pre-Season Athletic Practice
    (Times to be determined by specific coaches)

  • 7:30 am to 9:00 am Breakfast (Armington Center)
    Students present ID card.

  • 9:00 am Adventure-based Service Learning Project (Gather with your COR 101 class at rear of Hogue Hall and prepare to board buses.)
    Be sure to wear old clothes that can get water, paint and mud on them. Depart for Overnight Service/Learning Project - A day and a half of service, worship, and community building.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2002

  • 8:00 am to 9:00 am - Breakfast (Camp Mihaska Pavilion)
    Gather with your COR 101 group for fellowship and breakfast.

  • 9:00 am to 10:30 am - Whole Group Praise and Worship
    Led by Chaplain, Lori Gaffner

  • 11:00 am Depart for Campus

  • 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm - Late Lunch (Armington Center)

  • 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm - Choral Auditions
    If you would like to join the Greenville College Chorale or Choir you must complete a choral audition in Rm 104 LaDue.

  • 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm - All Student Back to School Bash (Scott Field/Recreation Center)
    Enjoy dinner served BBQ style out on the lawn while listening to music by our own student radio station, WGRN (you will need your ID to eat). Interact with old and new friends as you join in the fun and activities planned by Student Association and Campus Activities Board (CAB). Rain Location: Recreation Center/H.J. Long Gymnasium.

  • 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm - Opportunities Fair (Scott Field)
    Organizations, clubs, academic departments, and ministry opportunities will be available for you to pursue. Ask questions, sign up and find out what life is all about at Greenville College.
