Dr. George Barber - Click for a larger imageDr. George Barber came to Greenville College in 1999 as the men’s head basketball coach and assistant professor of Physical Education. He chose Greenville College because it offered him an opportunity to teach and coach in a Christian environment.

At Greenville College, Barber coaches men’s Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball. “I absolutely love sports, I love coaching, I love competition!” said Barber. Along with coaching, he teaches History and Philosophy of Physical Education, Adaptive Physical Education, and Psychology of Coaching along with several activity classes. Barber also serves on the Faculty Council.

In addition, Barber works with St. Louis Inner City students through Sunshine Missions, East St. Louis schools and Holten Youth Farm. He coordinates with Kent Krober, former director of Admissions, to bring those students to campus. “I think it’s really important to expose our team to a lot of the kids and in turn to expose the kids to a college setting,” said Barber. The basketball team meets with the students and lets them be a part of their practice. It helps the kids realize that they can go to college too. Each spring, Barber and his PE for Special Populations class partner with Professor Marilyn Richards and her Exceptional Child class to conduct the Greenville College Special Olympics for about eighty students from surrounding schools.

The Greenville College men’s basketball team won Regionals in 2001. “It was a lot of fun, our team worked hard.” He said, “No matter what level you win a championship (Div I, II, or III, regional, etc) it’s just great! It was really fun when the fans ran out onto the court,” said Barber
“Seeing people grow, developing relationships, I think that’s what I like the most,” said Barber, “I’d like to see them really reach their dreams and their goals, whether it be in basketball, the classroom or the world beyond Greenville College.”
