President's Society
    March 1, 2003 - Outline Only

1. Mission – We often END these events with the mission…I’d like to start this one with it.
- Crucial in times of economic uncertainty
- Mission statement - 4 phrases
   Transforms students
For lives of Character and Service
   Through a Christ-centered education
In the liberating arts and sciences
- Transformation is the KEY…GC has been transforming people for over a century.
Transformation is into the Image of Christ….What he did (Service) & Who he was (Character)
- Twin values – Practical & Personal, Means & End, Service & Character

2. PRACTICAL – 6 careers mean need some training but focus on long term too
DOUBLE CHALLENGE: Immediate & Long term
Clear vocations: Education+CCM+PreMed+DM+Ministry+MIS+Media Promotions
Transferable skills: Read/Write/Think/Communicate/Collaborate/Integrate
Real World problem solving

3. PERSONAL – It’s about character:
World politics (Bush & Hussein)
Family breakdown (marriage faithfulness, children accountable)
Personal (IRS time, White lies-Dr. Diane Komp-Anatomy of a Lie)
Students (Abide by lifestyle they sign, pay loans they sign, Come to appoint, Do own work)
Some disagree……Eva Marie, Krispy Kreme CEO ”Adversity is way overrated as a path to character…besides who needs that much character anyway!”
BUT I believe a spiritual matter – God is at least as interested in who we ARE as what we DO.
DOUBLE CHALLENGE: Coach Analogy - Stretch and Nurture as keys to Growth
Requires unusual faculty and staff…people who can push and pull, provoke and hug.

4. PEOPLE:  Stories I’ve heard this week…..
Hugh Siefken – Who hold high standards but tells non-sci students “I’ll get you through this!”
Coach Kess – Who expect a lot but punishes himself when his guys fail and fall short
Rick McPeak – Who make students and sometimes parents uncomfortable, but respond to phone calls from students never even in his class who call because they know he’s approachable saying, “When can we get together?”
Greenville is about people & as we hire these days….(New Chemistry professor)..please PRAY.

5. PROGRAMS:  Aimed at exposing students to real problems AND stretching them in nurturing environment
A. Senior Seminar – Fall and January – Topic Terrorism – Jason Fishburn
B. St. Louis – January Interterm leading to fall SLUC - Megan Maltby
C. Africa – Last fall, 18 students, other schools, science and history, rural and urban - Ryan Giffen

6. PRAYER:
Difficult times economically, and politically.  Businesses are challenged….colleges no exceptions
Sister schools laying off faculty, cutting programs, freezing salaries, increases of 6,8,11%.
We rely on Lord to bring the right PEOPLE and to facilitate our PROGRAMS
I leave you with three prayer requests:  P.E.G.
Programs: Fall SLUC (recruiting and refurbishing), Fall Africa (recruiting), Educ review, MA launch
Enrollment: Change in leadership, economic turn/cost increases
Giving: Thank you for all you’ve done!  You are our among our biggest investors
Campaign last fall said 4 parts (Endow, Progs, Capital, Annual) >$6.8, now >$10m
As we reach out to you in the next 12-15 months, we ask you to pray using our "Prayer Calendar" and to consider sacrificial gifts.
