Interterm in Europe 2004

Arc de Triomphe2 weeks in 2 countries equals over 3,000 miles and 6 hours of jet lag. Over interterm Dr. Cecelia Ulmer, David Ulmer, and 8 students traveled to France and England to experience fine arts at its best.

We arrived at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris at 8:00 am (1:00 am CDT) after an 8-hour plane ride. We were exhausted, but exhilarated. We visited Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, and the Latin Quarter. That was just our first day! While in France, we were privileged to go to art museums such as the Louvre and saw the famous “Mona Lisa” by Da Vinci, the Rodin Museum and saw the “The Kiss,” and Museé d'Orsay, which housed paintings, by Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas, and Seurat. Our other adventures included the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur at Montmatre, and Versailles.

The Moulin RougeOur 8 days in England began with taking the Eurostar, a train that travels at speeds up to 200 mph, under the English Channel to London. We were fortunate to see Les Miserables , Stomp , The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) , and a contemporary performance at the International Mime Festival. We saw masterpieces by Raphael, Vermeer, and Van Eyck at the National Gallery, and enjoyed soothing classical music at St. Martin's in the Fields. We took pleasure in seeing such sites as the Tower of London, Big Ben, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Globe Theatre, Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, and Trafalgar Square. We were even privileged enough to worship at Westminster Abbey.

Though the days were few and the traveling long, it was a good experience to be had by all!
