Memories

From Pixels to Pictures

As a service to our GC community, we are making high-resolution images available from selected "Memories" pages. You may use these images to print photo-quality pictures at home!

Instructions:

Saving the image on your computer

  1. Choose an image you would like to print and save the image on your computer's hard drive by (1) right click on the "1600 x 1200 High-Res Image" link and select "Save Target As ..." OR (2) click on the 1600 x 1200 high-res image link below the image, wait for the image to appear, right click on the image and choose "Save as picture." Before saving, read Step 2 ...

NOTE: If you are downloading these photos from a modem, I suggest using method 1 so you don't have to wait for the picture to show on your screen. It will take a few moments for the image to save either way. Each high-resolution image has a file size of between 1.5 and 2.5 MB and will take approximately 5-8 minutes to download on a 28.8 K modem.

  2. When the Save As box appears, select the file in which you would like to save your image and click OK.

NOTE: I recommend you create a folder called "pictures" on your hard drive and place all your images here (just so you know where they are :-)). (If you are using a PC computer, create a "pictures" folder in your "My Documents" folder.)
-- To create a new folder with a PC, go to the "My Documents" folder on your hard drive while you are in the "Save As" dialog box.
-- Click on the "Create New Folder" icon in the upper-right-hand corner of the "Save As" dialog box. (It looks like a file folder with a star on the top right corner.)
--You will now see a "New Folder" has been added to the "My Documents" directory. If the words "New Folder" are not highlighted, click once on the words, pause for a second, and click a second time to highlight the words.
-- Rename the "New Folder" as "pictures."
-- Double-click on the "pictures" folder to select this folder for the image you are saving and click OK.

  3. The image is now saved on your hard drive

Printing the image

  1. Using a color printer, a variety of programs and printing services, you may now edit and/or print this picture.

  2. Although there are a variety of color printers for sale, most people use color ink-jet printers for printing photos. (We like the Epson 600, 800, 900 line of color ink-jet printers, but there are many others from which you can choose.)

  3. Software Programs:
Adobe Photoshop and Adobe PageMaker are the king and queen of imaging and printing, but you can also use the following less-expensive and less-complicated programs:

Adobe PhotoDeluxe (Mac, PC-Home and PC-Business versions)
Paint Shop Pro (a favorite of many)
Microsoft Photo Editor (comes with more-recent versions of Microsoft Office)

Each of these programs will come with instructions for printing your images.

  4. Printing Services:
An excellent option for those who don't own a color printer is to use an online photo company such as Ofoto.com, Shutterfly.com or dotPhoto.com. You can send the file to this service and for a reasonable fee, they will print and send the image to you.

A brief P.S. ... you can send images to other people using email.
Please use the large "web" image, NOT the high-res images designed for printing pictures.

Sending images with email

  1. Click on the thumbnail of the image to view the larger "web" image (NOT the high-res image). Save this image to your computer using the above instructions.

NOTE: The high-res images are not email friendly in most cases. They are very large files. Use the larger "web" image (the image you see when you click on one of the small, thumbnail images) for email.

  2. Create your email and click the "Attach" button. Find and select the image you want to send and click OK.

  3. Send your email. The picture will be attached to the email when the receiver gets your message.

NOTE: As there are many different email programs in use, check with the "Help" section of your email program to verify the process they desire for you to send an email attachment.
