Greenville College Improvements Relieve Parking
Demands on City Streets
GREENVILLE, IL – One of many advancements made this summer, Greenville
College has significantly increased the availability of on-campus
parking. The college recognized an increased demand on street parking,
due in part to an upward trend in college enrollment, and sought
to ease the situation through four projects, Ganton Circle, Snyder
Hall lot improvements, Burkhardt Center expansion and new student/commuter
lots at the Greenville Free Methodist Church.
With the completion of these projects, made possible through community
cooperation, alumni gifts and college resources, the total number
of parking spaces on campus now totals 458, an increase of 180 from
last year’s total of 278.
Greenville College has been aware of the shortage of parking on
campus and has worked on many changes throughout the years. This
summer, according to Patrick Miller, resident director of Janssen
Hall, “the goal was to look more ahead instead of just being reactionary.”
The most extensive project was the construction of the Ganton Circle
on the north edge of campus, just off of Beaumont Avenue. Funded
by a generous gift from Lloyd Ganton, a 1960 GC graduate and member
of the Board of Trustees, and his wife, Judi, this new facility
includes over 40 parking spaces in two different lots, a new entrance
way, and easier access to Armington Center, which houses both the
dining commons and the Office of Admissions. The north lot of Ganton
Circle is designated for permit/no overnight parking and the south
lot is reserved for visitors.
Snyder Hall lot, the primary lot for students, faculty and staff,
was expanded and resurfaced, adding about 15 new spaces and enhancing
the aesthetics of the west side of campus. In addition, access to
the Snyder lot was moved to Prairie Street, which allowed for a
new layout of spaces. On the east edge of campus, the Burkhardt
Center lot was expanded to add 13 new spaces. Both Snyder and Burkhardt
lots are reserved for permit parking only.
To further ease the demand for student parking, the Greenville
Free Methodist church has granted permission for the college to
use their west lot for freshman parking, providing an additional
89 spaces. A second Free Methodist church lot has been designated
for commuter parking. Future improvements include the planned expansion
of the parking lot west of Tenney Hall from 20 spaces to 35 spaces.
Addressing both campus and community needs, Greenville College
hopes these parking additions will provide ample room for campus
community and visitor parking, while at the same time alleviate
street parking. Miller adds, “Not only have these projects answered
immediate needs, but they have also equipped this campus for future
demands on our facilities as well.”
Greenville College is a four-year Christian liberal arts school
with more than 1100 traditional, adult degree completion and graduate
students. Founded in 1892, it is affiliated with the Free Methodist
Church.
