Greenville College Completes Changes of Phone Numbers in Preparation
for 911
All campus extensions were given direct-dial 664
numbers over spring break; main numbers remain the same
Change continues to be the story at Greenville College. Over spring
break this past week (March 27-31), nearly all campus phone extensions
were changed to direct-dial 664 numbers in order to comply with
conversion to the new 911 system coming to Bond County this summer.
With these changes, the public will be able to dial direct to any
campus phone without going through the switchboard. All internal
phone extensions were also changed to match the external 664 numbers.
What has not changed, however, are the college's main numbers of
664-2800 and 664-1840, as well as its three toll-free numbers for
prospective traditional and GOAL students. Also remaining unchanged
are all the fax machine phone numbers on campus, which already had
664 direct-dial numbers.
A complete listing of all the new 664 campus phone numbers can
be found on the college's web site at www.greenville.edu. Just follow
the link from the main page. A special insert of new phone listings
is also planned for the spring issue of the alumni magazine The
Record, which is scheduled to mail near the end of April.
Rex Catron, Director of Information Services for the college, reports
that a few problems with the telephone service provider's system
came up during the conversion, which are still being worked out.
Some people attempting to dial into the new 664 numbers may experience
some difficulty getting through. As of Friday morning (March 31),
three of the eight main lines coming into the college were working
occasionally and the other five were not working. Callers may hear
a fast busy signal if they are unable to get through. Ameritech
is working to get the problems corrected.
With the new direct-dial numbers, the college plans to publish
in future local phone directories a list of some offices and departments
that frequently receive calls from the public. These include:
Admissions 664-7100
Adult and Graduate Studies 664-6755
After Hours/Weekend Emergency (618) 322-6692
Alumni Office 664-6514
Bookstore 664-6720
Public Relations 664-6503
Sodexho Marriott (Food Service) 664-7141
Fitness Training Center 664-3660 (same as before)
Transcripts 664-7035
WGRN Radio 89.5 FM 664-6789
Zahniser Institute for Environmental Studies 664-6534
"We realize these changes will cause inconvenience and extra expense
to the college in some cases, but we had no choice in the matter,"
says Catron. "The move to a 911 system in Bond County this summer
requires that every phone have its own 664 number. These changes
are necessary to be compliant with the Illinois E911 regulations."
Catron says the college is also in the process of making several
other hardware and software upgrades to prepare for the 911 changeover.
