June 13-16
Saturday's BlueGrace Concert and Fireworks Highlight
Four-Day Weekend
GREENVILLE, ILL. - Greenville College will host its sixth annual
Alumni Reunion Weekend Thursday through Sunday, June 13-16. The
four-day weekend reunites the classes of 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967,
1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, and 1997 for their class reunions.
The weekend kicks off at 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 13 with a picnic,
ice cream social, and concert on Scott Field. At 9:00 pm, all are
invited to visit the new college observatory located on Ayers Road
two miles north of Greenville for stargazing.
On Friday, June 14, alumni and friends will be able to pursue their
individual interests as the day offers various workshops and activities.
The Panther Pride Golf Scramble, held Friday morning at Indian Springs
Golf Club, benefits Greenville College athletics.
The alumni banquet and young alumni family picnic both begin at
6:00 pm on Friday night. The banquet will be held in the Armington
Center, and the picnic occurs at Patriot's Park.
This year's alumni banquet features guest speaker, Dr. Robert E.
"Ish" Smith, president emeritus of Greenville College.
Dr. Smith graduated from Greenville College in 1957 and completed
a master's degree at Southern Illinois University. He later received
a Ph.D. at Florida State University.
Dr. Smith has long been considered a gifted teacher, coach, and
administrator who is known internationally for his influence in
introducing baseball to the Olympic Games. He retired in 1999 after
38 years of service to Greenville College.
A full slate of Saturday events, capped off by a fireworks display
at Patriot's Park, provides the last full day of activities. At
noon, the reunion classes will reconvene for their class reunion
lunches. Later in the afternoon, alumni and friends will receive
an update on the future of Greenville College in LaDue Auditorium.
After a Mexican fiesta family dinner in Armington Center, the activities
move to Patriot's Park where BlueGrace, a Christian bluegrass band,
ministers in concert at 7:30 pm. They debuted in 1992 and have performed
throughout the Midwest and overseas. The band's two commercial recordings,
"Grace Roots" and "No Strings," have both received
airplay worldwide. Their newest recording, "Through the Window,"
is scheduled for release in 2002.
The fireworks, presented by Stephens Family Healthcare of Greenville,
begin at 9:00 pm.
