Greenville College Hires New Vice President for Finance and CFO

After a national search, Greenville College has announced the hiring of Richard K. Rieder to serve as the new Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer. The 43-year-old administrator from Marion, Indiana, will begin his new duties officially on January 3, 2000.

Rieder will succeed Larry Sayler, who had been Greenville's VP for Business Affairs since 1995. Sayler will continue to teach courses in the Business Department left unstaffed by the death of Nancy Blankenship last July .

The Vice President for Finance is the Chief Financial Officer of Greenville College. Key responsibilities include oversight of the Business Office (budget, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll), physical plant (facilities, custodial, maintenance), campus services (information technology, mailroom, food service, book store), and human resources (personnel, benefits).

Rieder comes to Greenville from Indiana Wesleyan University where he has been Director of Personnel and Auxiliary Services for the past two years. Indiana Wesleyan has about 6,600 students and 425 full-time employees, as well as several hundred adjunct faculty who support its Adult and Professional Studies Program.

Since 1998 he has also served in a part-time role as Executive Director of the Association of Business Administrators of Christian Colleges, with about 170 member schools throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Rieder has worked in higher education since 1986, for 11 of those years as CFO at smaller Christian colleges in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Michigan. He has provided leadership to a wide range of responsibilities, including business office, human resources, information systems, mailing and printing services, physical plant, security, food services, bookstore, risk management, investments, and financial aid.

David A. Hoag, Greenville's Vice President for Advancement, chaired the search committee, which reviewed more than 75 applicants for the CFO position. One factor that made Rieder stand out, according to Hoag, was the fact that he was instrumental in a turnaround at Bryan College in Tennessee from 1990-96.

President James Mannoia said Rieder brings a wealth of experience to his new position. "His greatest strengths are in building systems for finance and personnel, both areas of need at Greenville College. He is also known for his ability to put together a team of co-workers and coordinate their efforts in a highly collaborative way. He is already involved in the search process for a college Controller," said President Mannoia.

After being at a larger university, Rieder is looking forward to working again as a CFO at a smaller school like Greenville. "I enjoy the 'high-touch' environment that is evident at a small Christian college," he said.

He and his wife Darlene have two boys, Ryan and Benjamin, ages 12 and 10. His wife and family will wait until June to move to Greenville.

Greenville College is a four-year accredited Christian liberal arts school with about 1,100 traditional, adult degree completion, and graduate students. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the Free Methodist Church.
