Monday, Oct. 30 has been designated as "Voter Awareness Day"
on the campus of Greenville College. Three area politicians will
be speaking to students, faculty, and guests from the community
during Mondays chapel service at 9:30. That service is open
to the public, and will be held in H. J. Long Gymnasium to accommodate
the larger-than-usual crowd expected to attend.
The three elected officials from this area who have agreed to participate
are State Representative Kurt Granberg (D), U.S. Congressman John
Shimkus (R), and State Senator Frank Watson (R). Each has been invited
to speak briefly on the issues important to them, followed by a
short time for Q&A with the audience.
Why the Voter Awareness Day? Greenville College President James
Mannoia explains, "We are proud to be part of the community
and want to be good citizens by helping to increase the awareness
within our campus community and in the Greenville community at large
of the issues at stake in this years election."
Dr. Tom Morgan, who is organizing Mondays activities on campus,
adds, "Scripture admonishes Christians to exercise our civic
duties, and liberal arts education has always valued the preparation
of students for citizenship."
A number of elected officials were invited to join in Mondays
chapel service. Granberg, Shimkus, and Watson accepted the invitations
to participate.
Greenville College is a four-year accredited Christian liberal
