Shultz Breaks NCCAA National Record; Ferrell Wins Wheeler Award;
GC Women Place Fifth Nationally
GREENVILLE, ILL. - Greenville College junior Andrea Shultz not
only won the Women's Hammer Throw at the National Christian College
Athletic Association (NCCAA) Track & Field Championship; she
did it in national record fashion. Shultz's throw of 151' 5"
bested the old record by two feet and was six feet farther than
the next competitor.
Senior Amy Ferrell became a first time recipient of the prestigious
Wheeler Award presented each year to the male and female Track &
Field student-athlete that best exemplifies Christian character,
athletic excellence, and campus leadership. Ferrell also had a successful
weekend on the track, placing second in the 10,000-Meter Run and
eighth in the 5000-Meter Run.
The Lady Panthers concluded the national meet with their strongest
finish in history as they placed fifth overall with 76 points, just
nine points out of third. Malone College (Canton, Ohio) won the
women's team competition.
In addition to Shultz and Ferrell, several other athletes contributed
to the overall team effort. Meredith Deters placed third in the
1500-Meter Run and the 800-Meter Run. She was also a member of the
fourth place 4x400-Meter Relay team and the school record-breaking
4x800-Meter Relay team. Joined by Misty Mesecher, Miriam Fisher,
and Val Ernst, the ladies ran 9:38.89, breaking the old school record
by over seventeen seconds.
Erica Gaesser received an At-Large All-American honor for her efforts
in the 200-Meter Run, 400-Meter Run, 4x100-Meter Relay, and 4x400-Meter
Relay. Gaesser's times in the 200 (25.80) and 400 (58.23) were both
school records and fourth place finishes. As anchor of the relays,
her teams finished fourth.
Jenny Svoboda set a school record in the 400-Meter Low Hurdles
as her time of 1:06.47 edged out her own school record. The effort
placed Svoboda fourth in her event.
Val Ernst was another component of Greenville's potent middle distance
squad. Ernst placed fourth in the 800-Meter Run and was a member
of the 4x400-Meter Relay as well.
Stephanie Weiss, Jada Hogg, and Nicki Stone contributed points
by placing in the Shot Put, Javelin, and Heptathlon, respectively.
At the conclusion of the meet, Greenville produced one national
record, four school records, ten lifetime best efforts, and eleven
season records.
Three women were named Academic All-Americans. Amy Ferrell, Miriam
Fisher, and Tiffany Weiner all posted grade point averages of approximately
3.75 on a four-point scale.
