Rev. Melvin SchaperRev. Melvin Schaper ’45 was honored February 7, 2001 for his service to the country of Grenada. Melvin and his wife, Joy, founded the St. John’s Christian Secondary School. At the ceremony, Governor General Daniel Williams presented him with an award citation, and Prime Minister Keith Mitchell delivered a speech.

Schaper moved his family from Independence, KS to Grenada in 1964. He was allowed to convert a cocoa drying warehouse into a school and began work on it in November. By January, the classrooms were completed, creating the first secondary school in the area.

“[Schaper] would see prospective students of all ages loitering in the streets or sitting on a bridge and invite them to ‘just observe a few classes,’” said granddaughter Sharlyn Splean. “If lack of money was the reason they didn’t come to school, [Schaper] would find some odd job to allow them to pay the small fee, or he would privately pay it himself.”

Following graduation from Greenville College, chaper earned a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1946, a Master of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1948, and a Master of Science in Education from Kansas State University – Pittsburg in 1962. 324 W. A couple of calls led to the widows of veterans involved in the mission, but eventually Previte was able to track down and visit four of the men that completed the high-risk mission.
