Burdette Andrews ’30 retired on June 30, 2002
following 56 years as superintendent of Vandercook Lake Schools
in Jackson, Mich. Andrews, 94, began his tenure in July 1946.
He planned to continue as a consultant for the district.
“Vandercook Lake has been very fortunate to have had
Mr. Andrews as a superintendent for all these years,”
said assistant superintendent Ron Bennett. “His life
is dedicated to his community and the education of its children.
This community continues to be supportive of the schools,
and this is largely due to the guidance of Mr. Andrews.”
Andrews’ tenure has been recognized on numerous occasions.
In 2000, Education Week, of Washington, D.C., ran a story
to recognize him as the nation’s longest-serving superintendent.
The Michigan Association of School Administrators noted his
accomplishment during an annual conference in January 2002.
“He’s a legend,” said Mike Flanagan, executive
director of the association. “Sometimes you say these
things casually, but it’s true, this man is a legend.
It’s not just time. You think of the positive impact
he’s had on generations of kids. It’s a wonderful
story.”
In 1999, the name of Vandercook Lake middle and high schools
was changed to the Burdette W. Andrews Campus.

Dr.
Bokko Tsuchiyama ’42 was profiled in Princeton
Theological Seminary’s inSpire magazine in an issue that
concentrated on the connections of Princeton to the continent
of Asia. As the son of a Japanese pastor who studied in the
United States and served in Asia during World War II, Tsuchiyama
came to the United States to study in 1939 at the advice of
his father.
After graduating from Greenville College in 1942, Tsuchiyama
faced indecision about the next step in his life. Rather than
returning home to face risk to his well-being, he stayed in
the United States and attended Princeton, just as his father
had 14 years earlier. He began in Princeton’s accelerated
program and was able to earn an M.Div. in just two years.
He continued at the seminary and earned a Th.M. in 1945 before
beginning his ministry. Tsuchiyama later returned to Princeton
in 1955 to work on a Ph.D. in Christian education and completed
it in 1964.
Over his fifty years of ministry as a pastor, professor,
university president, and children’s center director,
Tsuchiyama was instrumental in the founding of a college that
prepared ministers and teachers, established a program for
children’s research, and improved early childhood education
in Asian countries through work with the Economic Social Council
of the United Nations.

Dr.
Kenneth Smith, Jr. ’53 has become the first and
only U.S. doctor to implant a potentially revolutionary electronic
eye device that allows a blind patient to see. Dr. Smith, a
professor of neurosurgery at the St. Louis University School
of Medicine, performed the two- to three-hour surgical procedure
in Lisbon, Portugal, in April 2002. He was one of four specialists
who operated on eight blind patients receiving artificial vision
systems developed by the Dobelle Institute.
“With this technology, there’s new hope that
some patients who have lost their vision through trauma can
unscramble light patterns well enough to function,”
Smith said. “Patients who live in darkness potentially
have a light at the end of the tunnel.”
The artificial vision system is a more complicated version
of the visor worn by Geordi La Forge, the blind chief engineer
in the science fiction television show Star Trek: The Next
Generation. Patients are implanted with devices that act as
artificial eyes by stimulating the visual cortex of the brain.
Two
patients, who had been totally blind before their surgeries
in April, have already learned to use the prosthetic system
well enough to slowly drive cars on private property. They
could walk freely around a laboratory, avoid obstacles, and
look outside a window to see a tree.
Smith has been working with the Dobelle Institute, a privately
held company that creates medical devices, since 1970. Dobelle
began developing an artificial vision system in 1968, and
the project has picked up steam as computer technology has
improved.
Patients use special sunglasses fitted with a miniature television
camera, microcomputer, and stimulator. The gear attaches by
cable to a tiny fire hydrant-like device implanted in the
back of the skull that connects electrodes on the surface
of the visual part of the brain.
Patients don’t have “normal” vision. Instead,
they see white flashes of light that resemble stars on a black
background and learn to interpret the patterns to gain mobility.
“By putting an array of electrodes in the brain, patients
see a pattern of white spots that they could learn to interpret
well enough to get some useful vision,” Smith said.
Smith
has been director of St. Louis University’s division
of neurological surgery since 1968 and professor of surgery
there since 1971. An endowed chair in neurosurgery at the
St. Louis University School of Medicine is named in his honor.

Dr. John Burd ’61, president of Brenau University,
was honored April 19, 2002 with the dedication of the John
S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts at Brenau University.
The city of Gainesville, Ga., and Hall County paid tribute
to him by proclaiming the day as John S. Burd Appreciation
Day.
The dream to erect the 51,000 square foot building was conceived
six years ago with a vision of alleviating overuse of Brenau’s
century-old Pearce Auditorium and providing a state-of-the-art
theatre and classroom facilities for the performing arts department.
The $11.5 million building features seating for 350 people
in a two tier theatre. It includes a recital hall, lecture
hall, rehearsal theatre, art gallery, choir rehearsal room,
printmaking classroom, and photography lab. It also houses
music department offices and practice rooms. The project also
included a $1 million endowment for art programming.

“It is a structure that says to prospective students
that this is a wonderful place in which to study and perform,”
Burd said. “And I believe there is a positive psychological
effect on all of us. That Brenau can construct something so
beautiful and of this size says we are doing well.”
For more than 120 years, Brenau has been the catalyst, the
venue, and the backbone for arts and cultural events for Brenau
students and the northeast Georgia community. Each year, the
university presents music recitals, dramas, dance performances,
and art exhibitions by campus, local, regional, national,
and international artists.
“We have all been beneficiaries of this educator of
vision,” said John Jacobs, Jr, chairman of the board
of trustees. “He came to Brenau and transformed the
campus, both physically and academically. The board of trustees
believes his leadership and vision made this and much more
possible.”
Burd has been president of Brenau since 1985. Over his tenure,
he has improved the institution’s financial position,
increased the endowment from $2.5 million to $50 million,
and constructed and renovated several buildings on campus,
including a new library.
