2002 Fiscal Year Ends With All-time Giving High
Thanks to the generosity of many Greenville College alumni and
friends, the college ended the 2001-2002 fiscal year with the all-time
giving total high in the 110-year history of the institution. If
preliminary figures prove accurate, the year ended with $6.13 million
in gifts, topping the 1999-2000 record by $2.4 million. The gifts
came in several forms: $2 million from the estate of an anonymous
donor which will be used to purchase the FM Church building, $1.94
million in grants, $1 million in other restricted giving and $1.23
million in unrestricted giving.
This total would be phenomenal under normal economic conditions
but in a year marked with recession and significant decreases in
charitable giving, it is truly remarkable. The Chronicle of Philanthropy
even reports that education was one of the hardest hit by the recession
with a 2.3 percent reduction in giving.
“At Greenville College, we also saw these effects, especially
in the decline of stock gifts,” said David Hoag, vice president
for College Advancement. “Yet...our alumni and friends helped
us reach our goal for the Annual Fund and achieve a record year.
It was really a remarkable year. We thank God for his continued
blessings.”
