Grace Stewart '25 died August 31 at age 97. She retired as Finance Officer at the Veterans Administration and then worked as secretary to Harold Ickes former Secretary of the Interior.

Ruth E. Crusius '26 died November 23 at age 97. She taught elementary school for 21 years with Beecher Public Schools, retiring in 1965. She was also a charter member of Westwood Heights Free Methodist Church.

Cleo McMullen '28 died January 29, 1998 at age 91. She was a librarian and teacher in Illinois schools for 21 years. She used her many talents in the ministries of the Greenville Free Methodist Church, the Greenville College Faculty Women's Club, and Monday night entertainment at Fair Oaks. Along with her family, she loved students everywhere.

Irene Grob Sussenbach '30 died October 27 at age 90. Husband, Paul Sussenbach '30 died December 17 at age 91. During their retirement they operated Cricket Hill Orchard in Pocahontas and were members of the Evangelical Church of Christ in Highland.

Henry C. Diehl '32 died August 16 of pneumonia, complications of a stroke.

David C. Todd '33 died August 30 at age 83. He taught industrial arts and coached basketball and baseball for 45 years, at schools in Ohio and Indiana.

Rev. Walter Burton Martin '36 died October 22, 1996 at age 81. After graduating from GC, he earned a Master's degree in Scared Theology, from The Biblical Seminary in New York City. Missionary and Parish Associate in the Presbyterian church, he also formed Burt Martin Associates, and for 22 years produced Christian motion pictures as a ministry under Presbytery. He also established a Communications Foundation, to produce films and TV shows, which were used in churches.

Dr. Raymond G. Mathewson '40 died July 26. He received a M.D. from the University of Illinois in Chicago, and practiced medicine in Pana, IL for 44 years before retiring in 1984. He was the oldest son of the late Henry A. Mathewson, longtime member of the Board of Trustees.

Bethel (Lucas) Crum '46 died July 12 at age 72. She was an elementary school teacher for 45 years, having taught in Illinois, Kansas, and Oklahoma. She founded an inspirational support group for Alzheimer's victims and caregivers. Her husband, (Howard Crum'45) preceded her in death.

Helen M. (Billings) Miller '46 died March 26 at age 73. After graduating from GC, she taught all elementary grades in various cities where she and her husband, (Earl Miller '60) lived, until her retirement in 1983. In a number of the schools where she taught, she was the first white teacher in formerly segregated schools.

Lt. Col. James W. Burke '48 died November 8, 1997 at age 76. After graduating from GC, he entered the Greenville, school system. He retired in 1984 as principle at Greenville Jr. High, having taught 35 years. His service in the U.S. Army included WWII and 30 years in the reserves, retiring as Lt. Col. He was also awarded the Army Commendation Medal in 1970.

Williford A. Hockett '50 died June 18 at age 69. He taught at Danville Area College for 36 years, until retiring in 1992. He then ran Hockett Real Estate.

George K. Skene '51 died May 20, at his home in Anna-Maria Land, Florida. He served as a pastor in the East Michigan conference for 32 years. Prior to that he served in Illinois conference for 7 years.

James A. Roberson '52 died May 8 at age 67. He was a retired minister of the Free Methodist Church of the Wabash conference. His years in ministry also included missionary service via radio at HCJB in Quito, Ecuador, and in San Francisco, CA.

Charles D. Cronkhite '53 died December 2, 1996 at age 88. A resident of Pueblo, CA for 52 years, he taught at Centennial High School until he retired. He was also a member of Pueblo Free Methodist Church.

Kenneth L. Hepker '65 died March 19. He loved the Lord, lead the Music Department of church, and sang for many occasions.

Herbert Neely '78 died in March of 1991. He was employed by the First City Bank. He did post graduate work in communication at Texas Southern University in Houston, TX.

Jonathan Maurer '88 died December 13 of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. He was a science teacher at O'Connell Middle School in Lakewood, CO and a member of the First Free Methodist Church in Lakewood. "Loving husband, faithful friend, dedicated teacher, outstanding athlete, lover of good books and quality music, an authentic follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, humble servant of God," Jon is survived by his wife, Pam (Koenig '88) and four young children as well as many GC alumni family and friends.

Rebecca Ahrens '91 died December 16 from a chronic illness. She was employed as a counselor at Keene State College in Keene, NH and working on a masters degree. Kurt Schaefer '91 stated in tribute, "Beckie was always ready with a laugh or a funny-face, she brightened many lives and those who knew her still feel her presence today. Beckie was not one to be categorized by others, as she was a friend to a diverse group of people. . . . As Beckie grew in her faith, she provided a good example to others. . . . She had a caring that was uncharacteristic of most her age."

Joel Pierce '98 died December 9 from smoke inhalation during the Kinney Hall fire. Joel was a senior Religion major from Warren, NH and a founding member of the band, Mustard Seed. He was to be married December 20 to Janae Ferguson '98. Professor Rick McPeak, Joel's advisor, offered these words, "I knew Joel Pierce to be an earnest Christian who desires first of all to be a minister of the gospel and secondly to perform music."
