A message from Christy Coates, Alumni Association President |
Dear friends,
Welcome to our enhanced ALUMNI NEWS. In addition to your alumni updates, we plan to inform you about current activities of the Greenville College Alumni Association.
In subsequent issues of THE RECORD, the alumni advisory board will introduce the mission of the alumni association and present opportunities for each of us to become even more involved with our alma mater and its constituents.
Greenville College is blessed with supportive alumni. Our financial contributions represent a measurable and generous form of support; however, we can also offer meaningful service to this institution.
First and foremost, we can pray for wisdom, insight and clear understanding for each member of the faculty, staff, administration, student body and alumni as we all strive to equip one another for lives of effective leadership and redemptive servanthood.
Additionally, we can retain contact with GC by serving as mentors, offering job opportunities, and directing prospective students to our school.
Each of us has benefited from our relationship with Greenville College. Let's continue to embrace this relationship and extend it to enhance the future of our alma mater.
Sincerely, Christy

ALUMNI BOARD CONVENES FOR SPRING '98 MEETING |
The Board of Directors of the Greenville College Alumni Association met for their biannual meeting February 6-7.
The goal for this "administration" is to serve as a working, active group of people, clearly informed about activities and issues affecting GC and consistently serving as liaisons between GC and its constituents, including other alumni, prospective students and supporting church members.
Following a timely message from Jim Rathgeb '76 at Alumni chapel on Friday, the board addressed key subjects including nominations, board awareness and image enhancement, constitution and bylaws, student recruitment and special events, primarily the 1998 GC Summer Reunion weekend June 18-21.
Nominated to the board during this meeting were 1998 class representative, Chrissy Matthews, Vickie Morgan McFerran '85, J. Richard Schien '62, and Kathleen Sullivan '97, the first GOAL graduate elected.
The board discussed various elements of an organized alumni student recruitment program which will be announced and implemented over the course of the next three years.
Summer Reunion '98 planning brought this spring meeting to an exciting close. This year's events and activities, scheduled for June 18-21, will build on the overwhelming success of the '97 reunion weekend.
Your relationships with possible prospective students and parents provide valuable opportunities to share about the rich Greenville College tradition.
Recently students commented on their view of GC's distinctives, "Faculty care about me as an individual. . . . There is a commitment to academic excellence on this campus. . . . Students are made to feel welcome on this campus."
All alumni are encouraged to spread these good words of Greenville College to friends, family, and colleagues with whom they come in contact.
Please call the Office of Admissions at (800) 345-4440 or (618) 664-2800, ext. 4401 to obtain admissions materials or to provide names of prospective students.
Nearly 40 former Panthers and Lady Panthers came back for the first annual Winter Games - GC Style. Alumni from at least 7 different states, many who had not been back in years, returned for the event. It was also exciting to welcome many "spectator" alumni who returned to once again enjoy basketball at Greenville College.
The former Lady Panthers kicked off the day with a very close and entertaining game, followed by an intense battle between the former Panthers under the age of 40 and the Greenville J. V. team. The old guys prevailed but not after a great challenge by the students. To the surprise of some in the gym, the faculty/staff team beat the former players over 40. (The fact that most of the faculty team were in their 30's may have been a factor.)
At halftime of the Lady Panthers game, 18 GC sweat shirts were presented to the winners of the shooting competitions, along with 18 GC t-shirts to the runner-ups.
With cow bells, orange and black shakers, "Paw Power" face tattoos and t-shirts, the crowd was appropriately adorned to cheer Alumni and students during the day's competitions.
