Spring 2000

Commencement Speakers & Schedule

This spring marks the first time ever that Greenville College will hold two separate commencement services, one for traditional and one for GOAL graduates. The increasing numbers of graduates in recent years made the division necessary.

GOAL Commencement will be held Saturday afternoon (see schedule at right), with the traditional ceremony Sunday afternoon.

Greg L. Mathison, Ph.D. (no photo was available at press time) will deliver the GOAL Commencement address. Dr. Mathison is a psychologist, college professor, seminar speaker, and author who has invested most of his career working with abused/neglected children and families, persons with developmental disabilities or mental illness, and other vulnerable individuals. He is currently Director of Healthcare for GTE Data Services in Tampa, FL.

In another break from tradition, the Baccalaureate service has been moved to Saturday evening. The keynote speaker will be Greenville College’s own Ellen Mannoia, at the special request of the senior class.

Prior to becoming GC’s First Lady in January 1999, Mrs. Mannoia served in the healthcare profession as a certified physical therapist in the areas of acute care, sports injuries, back rehabilitation, and outpatient care.

Probably the biggest reason the senior class requested her to be their Baccalaureate speaker, however, is the dignity and courage she has demonstrated in battling a recurrence of cancer over the past year. She continues to be an inspiration to the entire college community.

Nicholas Wolterstorff, Ph.D., has been the Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology in the Divinity School at Yale University since 1989. Prior to that, he taught philosophy at his alma mater, Calvin College, for 30 years. He has also served as president of the American Philosophical Association (Central Division), and the Society of Christian Philosophers.

He is the author of 14 books, including most recently, Thomas Reid and the Story of Epistemology.
