1920s

Selma PierceSelma (Sussenbach ’20) Pierce celebrated her 100th birthday October 12, 2001 with nearly one hundred family members and friends.

She was recognized with letters from President George W. Bush, former President and First Lady George and Barbara Bush, Illinois Governor George Ryan, Illinois State Representative Kurt Granberg, United States Representative John Shimkus, and NBC’s Willard Scott.

When she attended Greenville College, tuition cost $60 each semester, and room and board was three dollars. She began working at Bradford National Bank following graduation, eventually training future bank president Roger Riedemann and future senior vice president Frank Joy, Sr. She married Chester Pierce in 1941 and was co-owner of Pierce Feed Store until retiring at age 72.

She spent much of her life active in the First Baptist Church of Greenville, serving as secretary, treasurer, trustee, and deaconess. Fair Oaks Nursing Home, 200 Healthcare Dr. Box 483, Greenville, IL 62246.

Greg Jefford ’78 was awarded a Ph.D. by the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Chicago after successfully defending “Mechanisms of Transmembrane Signaling between Neuroglian and Spectrin Cytoskeleton.” He has begun a cardiology training grant and does research on the mechanisms controlling acetylcholine receptor assembly and neuron targeting. 6022 S. Juanita Burge ’50 received the “Teacher of the Year Award” from the Illinois Retired Teacher Association at its convention in Springfield, Ill. on Oct. 15. Burge taught for 35 years in public schools, and has held offices in the Greenville IRTA chapter. 901 Killarney, Greenville, IL 62246

Sharon BlackSharon (Reinhard ’51) Black was profiled in the August 28, 2001 edition of the St. Petersburg Times after retiring from over 50 years in education.

When she and husband Dale moved from Indiana to Florida 12 years ago, she found it difficult to retire and began subbing for the Pasco County, Fla. school district. She had spent 38 years teaching second, third, and fourth grades in Fort Wayne.

Both of their children, their spouses, and two grandchildren have followed her into the field of education. Their daughter Carol (Black ’74) and son-in-law Mark Turnau ’75 both teach in New Port Richey, Fla. Her son Alan Black ’74 and daughter-in-law Donna (Quinnett ’74) also teach in Florida. Ronnie ElmoreRonnie Elmore ’69 appeared in various news outlets commenting on the importance of presidential pets. In the January 4, 2002 edition of USA Today, Elmore was quoted in an article headed “Clinton’s dog, Buddy, killed in accident.” He also appeared in an interview on NBC’s “Today Show.”

Elmore began a project concerning presidents and their pets around seven years ago when he moved to Kansas. He was close to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library where he learned of Eisenhower’s great love for animals. This prompted Elmore to search for other information on presidents and their pets. Each year he visits presidential libraries, presidential homes, and the Library of Congress to conduct research. His endeavors have led him to begin writing a book tentatively titled “Presidential Pet-pourri.”

Elmore is currently on the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University where he serves as associate dean for academic affairs. After receiving a bachelor of arts from Greenville College, Elmore earned a bachelor of science and doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Illinois. 1970s

Roger ReevesRoger Reeves ’71 recently received the Distinguished Service Citation by the Illinois Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (ISAAPT). He was recognized at the November 2001 meeting.

The distinguished service citation recognizes the outstanding contributions to the field of physics teaching in the state of Illinois. It provides special recognition in three areas – leadership of colleagues and students through physics teaching; professional contributions to section activities through contributed papers, workshop presentation, committee service, or elective office; and distinguished service at the nominee’s institution.

Reeves, who teaches physics at Hillsboro High School, was just the third high school teacher to receive the honor in the program’s 19-year history. 605 Hickory St., Hillsboro, IL 62049.

Barb JonesBarb (Burge) Jones ’73 received National Board Certification as a school teacher in Westcliffe, Colorado. National Board Certification is a symbol of teaching excellence. A voluntary process, it is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes nearly a year to complete. Through the assessment process, teachers document their subject matter knowledge, provide evidence that they know how to teach their subjects to students most effectively, and demonstrate their ability to manage and measure student learning.

Jones was certified in early adolescence English language arts. She has taught elementary school in the Custer County C1 District for more than 25 years.

Cynthia (Parnell ’74) Frette was selected as the educator of the month by Channel 17 News on ABC affiliate WAND-TV. She helped in saving the life of a bus driver at South Side School by performing CPR until paramedics arrived. Mike MulliganMike Mulligan ’76, head baseball coach at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School, led BBCHS to the 2001 Illinois Class AA state baseball championship in Geneva, Ill.

Mulligan and the BBCHS squad entered the state tourney with an uphill climb before them, having used standout pitcher Wade Greenlee in a Wednesday sectional final before Friday’s quarterfinal. Mulligan called on sophomore pitcher Kyle Arthur for the quarterfinal matchup and defeated Mt. Vernon 8-2. Mulligan went with Greenlee in the semifinal, beating Chicago Marist 8-1 to set up a showdown with pre-tournament favorite Oak Park-River Forest for the championship. Arthur returned to the mound for the title contest as BBCHS defeated Oak Park-River Forest 5-2.

“It feels great to win the title, especially for Coach Mulligan,” said Arthur. “He’s been here for a long time as a coach with the freshmen and as an assistant. He’s worked hard. He really deserves this.”

The win wrapped up the best finish in school history. The 1970 edition of the BBCHS baseball team, of which Mulligan was a member, took second place to Morton. 5213E E. 3000N Rd., Bourbonnais, IL 60914.

Michael WiegandMichael Wiegand ’92 was commissioned as an officer with the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division. After being hired in the spring of 2001, Wiegand trained at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center near Brunswick, Ga. and at the Secret Service Training Center near Washington, D.C. After completion of the five-month training course, a commissioning ceremony was held to honor the newly sworn officers. Larry Cockell, deputy director of the United States Secret Service, gave the keynote address.

The mission of the Secret Service Uniformed Division is protection of the President and the Vice President, their families, the White House, the Vice President’s residence, the Treasury Department, and foreign diplomatic missions in Washington, D.C. Wiegand has been assigned to the White House.
