Schoenhals Named Lincoln Laureate

Julia Schoenhals with Governor RyanIllinois Governor and Mrs. George H. Ryan presented the Student Laureate Medallion to 49 outstanding senior college students on October 27, 2001, who were recognized for excellence by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

Julia Schoenhals, a senior English/Spanish major, was selected as the Greenville College 2001 Lincoln Laureate. Julia is the daughter of G. Roger and Sandra Quantrell-Schoenhals of Edmonds, WA.

The Student Laureate Medallion is given each year, along with a $150 honorarium, to one member from the senior class of each four-year, degree-granting institution of higher learning in Illinois. This year, 49 colleges and universities participated in the program.

The event, held in the Hall of Representatives of the Old State Capitol State Historic Site, marked the 27th year that students were honored by the Academy.

“These students have exhibited a personal commitment to excel as seen by their remarkable academic accomplishments,” said Governor Ryan. “But just as important, these students serve as role models to other Illinois students, as well as their own family and friends. With hard-working, dedicated individuals such as these, Illinois and the rest of the nation can look forward to a bright and prosperous future.”

The Lincoln Academy’s Student Laureate Awards are presented for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities to seniors from the four-year, degree-granting colleges and universities in Illinois. Laureate nominations are submitted by each school and reviewed by the Lincoln Academy. One individual from among all Illinois junior college students, recommended by the Illinois Community College Board, is also recognized.

The Lincoln Academy, unique among the 50 states, was established 36 years ago to honor Illinois’ most distinguished citizens with the state’s highest award, the Order of Lincoln, which will be presented at the Lincoln Academy’s Spring Convocation to be held May 4, 2002 in Springfield.
