Carolyn AutenreithInspired by the work of Chinese artist, Li Jin, Carolyn (Juhlin ’85) Autenrieth,
colleague Ruth Winter, and their art students at Sanislo Elementary School in Seattle, Washington embarked on a creative journey to produce a multicultural piece of art. They based the size and scope of the piece on Li
Jin’s 60-foot scroll of various Chinese dishes, entitled A Feast, previously on display at the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM). Encouraged by the support o f the museum, the students undertook the creation of a
similar piece of art that would, in this case, reflect the ethnic diversity of students, faculty and staff at the school. This scroll included watercolor paintings of foods from various cultures with recipes written in their native language in the background. Students, faculty and staff fluent in the various languages assisted with background writing in Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Japanese, Russian, Korean, German, Ethiopian and other languages.

Art, Ethnicity, and Food Collide“Food is a unifying factor and gave the students a chance to learn about each other,” states Autenrieth. “This project validated their background and experiences by having their culture recognized through the scroll project.” With plans to unveil the scroll at the school, a multicultural festival was organized. The festival included food dishes represented on the scroll and the reading of each recipe in its native language. The Sanislo scroll is currently on display at the SAAM, where students and their families recently gathered for a formal art opening of their work.

Autenrieth added, “It was exciting for me to teach this lesson and get these kids engaged and talking about their cultural differences.” Autenrieth will complete her Master of Arts in Teaching this spring. 6406 49th Ave. SW, Seattle, WA 98136.
