Dr. Donald N. Bastian (not pictured), retired bishop of the Free Methodist Church, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award, although he was not able to be in attendance due to a schedule conflict. Bishop Bastian pastored the Greenville Free Methodist Church from 1961-73, then later served as the first bishop of the Canadian General Conference of the Free Methodist Church.
Greenville attorney John W. Kelsey received special recognition for serving as the college’s legal counsel for more than 40 years. He also served on the board of trustees for many years.

D. Ray Heisey ’54 has edited his second book on Chinese communication, Chinese Perspectives in Rhetoric and Communication (Stamford, CT: Ablex Publishing, 2000). Nora (Koppen) Schulze ’56 was recently inducted into the Wisconsin Turner District Hall of Fame. She taught PE for 31 years in four different schools as well as coaching intramural sports and high school gymnastics. William Freeman ’65 received a citation for bravery in June for his response as principal of Westview Elementary School in Champaign/Urbana, IL to a knife-wielding 37-year-old male. After stabbing his own father, the man attempted to stab his mother at Westview. Larry Hewitt ’71 was promoted to Assistant Medical Director for the Department of Corrections, Office of Health Services. Mark Gunggoll ’75 received his captain’s commission in the U.S. Navy in a Pentagon ceremony July 2. He is an intelligence officer. In making the presentation, Vice Admiral Fry commended Mark for new ground he has broken in gathering of military intelligence and for his leadership in creating new methods of satellite-related communications. Tim Stephens ’83 has been named Habitat Conservationist of the Year by the Wyoming Wildlife Federation.
