Spotlight

David VanWingeren ’98 was one of 51 applicants for a position at the prestigious Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, to work in the newly constructed Advanced Photon Source Facility, so the odds were not in his favor. What was in his favor, however, was his double major at GC in Chemistry and Physics, and his hands-on experience of helping to complete GC’s very own ion accelerator in the Physics lab, a project that many students worked on over a period of more than 21 years. Even though GC’s version is small in size and energy compared to the major accelerators of the world, it nevertheless contains many of the basic elements needed to produce, focus, and detect charged particles. David’s first-hand experience gave him the edge he needed to stand out from the other 50 candidates and land the position. The job and the location also allowed him to begin graduate study at the University of Chicago. 5800 E. Lake Dr., Lisle, IL 60532.
