News Brief
313 graduate in first
ever split ceremonies
Commencement 2000 was a weekend of firsts at Greenville College.
At the 108th commencement exercises May 20-21, the number of graduates
earning Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees surpassed
300 for the first time in school history.
President V. James Mannoia, Jr. presented diplomas to 185 traditional
graduating seniors and 128 adult graduates from the GOAL Program,
for a total of 313. With 233 graduates in 1998 and 269 in 1999,
this marked the third year in a row that a new high mark was established.
Due to the increasing size of graduating classes, this spring was
also the first time a separate commencement ceremony was held for
GOAL graduates. They processed Saturday afternoon, followed by baccalaureate
Saturday evening, and finally the commencement ceremony for traditional
Four faculty honored
on retirement
This spring Greenville College said farewell to four exceptional
faculty members at a dinner held in their honor May 22. With 73
years of combined service, each has left his or her mark on the
tradition of excellence at Greenville.
Dr. James Plett, a 1965 graduate of Seattle Pacific College, served
at Greenville with distinction for 26 years. He has held various
roles, from chair of the English Department to Registrar to Dean
of Academic Affairs. Dr. Plett and his wife Linda now live in Seattle.
Dr. Leon Winslow retired this year after 44 years of teaching and
administration. He spent 21 of those years at GC where he developed
the Science Education program for elementary and secondary education
majors, while teaching Earth and Space Science and Astronomy.
Over the years, Dr. Winslow developed an ever-growing relationship
between GC and more than 200 secondary teachers of biology, chemistry,
and physics through the Eisenhower Summer Science Programs. During
these one- or two-week periods, science teachers came to GC to develop
new methods for presenting ideas and principles.
Dr. Winslow and his wife Ellen will stay in Greenville, where he
will continue teaching part time at the college.
Dr. Ralph Montgomery came to GC in 1982 from Campbell University
in North Carolina. For most of those years he served as chairman
of the Music Department.
Perhaps his greatest achievement came in 1986 when he started the
innovative major Contemporary Christian Music. The CCM program has
brought national recognition to GC, most notably with the success
of the band Jars of Clay, which got its start at Greenville.
In retirement he will continue to write music and play with various
brass groups. He and his wife Mitzi have moved to Collinsville,
IL.
After 25 years as a teacher and administrator at the Instituto
Evangelico, a Free Methodist school in the Dominican Republic, Olga
Estevez came to Greenville College as a part-time lecturer in Spanish
in 1986. In 1994, she joined the faculty full-time. She also taught
a Bible study on Sunday mornings in her home, in which GC students
and local Spanish-speaking residents attended.
She and her husband Rolando plan to return to the Dominican Republic
after spending time visiting their three sons and two daughters
in the U.S.
Update on new apartments,
bookstore
Work has been progressing on two major construction projects this
summer, both of which should be completed and ready for use sometime
later this fall.
The new apartment building, located north of Beaumont Avenue near
the city water tower, will house about 60 students when it opens
later this year.
In the other major campus project, workers broke ground in July
for the facility that will house the new college bookstore on the
ground level and Communication Department offices and classrooms
on the second floor. Family Christian Stores will lease the first
floor and operate the bookstore, which will include a coffee shop
run by another vendor. Both businesses hope to be open before Thanksgiving.
