Carol (Lake '88) HummerCarol (Lake ’68) Hummer recently earned an Outstanding Teacher Award presented by the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. The foundation bestowed awards to five teachers across the United States on Feb. 14, 2003 in New York City. Richard Dreyfuss, star of the movie of the same name presented the awards at Carnegie Hall. Hummer also received a $10,000 monetary gift.

Serving as a music teacher at Cannon Elementary School in Danville, Ill., for the last six years, Hummer introduced a violin program five years ago that has grown to include 43 percent of the school’s students who learn to play the violin at no cost to them or the school district.

“This program has helped the children’s self-esteem and responsibility tremendously, and it’s cut down on a lot of discipline problems,” Hummer said in an interview with The Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette. “The kids have such pride in what they’re doing.”

The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation learned of the school’s program because of a grant application that Hummer submitted. After approval, the school gained 10 new violins. The foundation considered the teachers of 300 music programs that had received grants from the foundation over the last five years when selecting Hummer for the award.
