Summer/Fall 2003 Memories
The Class of '03
Close
to 300 traditional, degree completion and master’s level students
walked across the stage at the Crum Recreation Center this May as
Greenville College conducted its 111th commencement exercises.
Festivities for traditional students included the Ivy Cutting
Ceremony, choir concert and Baccalaureate. The senior class presented
a hanging sign for the lawn of Hogue Hall as their class gift. Justice
Robert Thomas of the Illinois Supreme Court’s Second District
served as commencement speaker.
Crum
Recreation Center was also the site for the adult and graduate studies
commencement, held on Saturday. Sharon Smith, executive director
at Bethany Place, a nonprofit, community-based AIDS service organization,
delivered the address.
Gregory R. Coates became the first student to be a fifth generation
Greenville graduate. Beginning with his great-great-grandfather,
Daniel Brenneman, from the class of 1904, Coates’ can trace
his GC lineage through the women in his family in a period that
spans 99 years. His GC legacy began even earlier, as Brenneman’s
father served on the board of trustees.
