Perseverance

Multi-Sport Student Athletes

Perseverance takes on many meanings to student athletes who participate in multiple sports. For such athletes, success in academic and social areas becomes much more of a challenge.

Michea McKay
Volleyball/Basketball/Track and Field

“It’s more than just a game. It is a love and desire to do what you do best.”

It has not taken long for this freshman to prove her validity as a multi-sport athlete. Michea was recruited to represent Greenville College in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. Already Michea has shown success through her leadership skills on the court. In volleyball, Michea led the team in kills. Her awards include first-team all-conference, newcomer of the year, team MVP, and offensive player of the year. In basketball, Michea’s presence on the court has already helped to lead the Panthers to victories.

Jeff Alm
Soccer/Golf

“The fact that I’m part of a team drives me to succeed.”

Jeff is a senior who plays both soccer and golf. He plans to graduate in the spring with a degree in Business Management. In addition to the commitment involved in being an athlete, Jeff is also the president of Chi Beta Sigma, and a member of Agape staff. Jeff believes that the three most important factors in perseverance are focus, self-determination, and good friends.

Jan Beatty
Soccer/Tennis

“I love the spiritual aspect of sports. The community that developes enables me to relate to my teammates on a spiritual level.”

Soccer and tennis offer Jan both team and individual activities. While she enjoys the challenge of an individual sport, Jan also values her relationships with fellow soccer teammates. Though she is juggling various activities—even student teaching this spring semester—Jan explains that athletics provide her with an outlet and a necessary release from the demands of everyday life.

Coach Brian Patton
Cross-Country/Track and Field

Coach Brian Patton returned to his alma mater in 1994 to assist in coaching both cross-country and track and field. Four years later, Patton began his career as head coach. Since his arrival, Patton has transformed these athletes from average to amazing.

What are the advantages and disadvantages in being a multi-sport athlete?

Brian Patton: It can hinder some athletes because of seasonal overlaps. For most, however, I think it’s great. Most college athletes were double or triple sporters in high school. They budget time well.

Are there any problems that occur when switching from one sport to the next?

Brian Patton: There is an adjustment period when moving from one sport to the next. However, the determining factor in adjustment lies in what level the athlete wishes to compete.

What advice do you give to someone wanting to participate in more than one sport?

Brian Patton: First, determine your goals and set your priorities. Then, do a time budget analysis, asking peers in the same situation for advice. Speak with the coaches involved. And pray about the decision.
