Dr. Elva McAllaster, more commonly known to her students and colleagues
as "Dr. Mac," taught English at Greenville College from
1956-1988. Loved and respected by the campus community, she dedicated
her life to Christian higher education, and subsequently touched
the lives of hundreds of students through teaching and role modeling.
"Dr. Mac had an infectious enthusiasm for the material she
presented to her classes. Her interesting vocabulary, witty parentheses
and quiet chuckles were a part of her daily lectures," remarked
former Greenville College President Dr. Robert E. Smith.
Dr. McAllaster published hundreds of poems, articles and short
stories, as well as six books, including Free
to be Single and a novel, Strettam.
"Ever since King David's time," she explains, "poetry
has been a means of prayer. In my own life, it's hard even to imagine
how my Christian yearnings and praisings would have been impoverished
without poetry as a tool. I am seldom many hours away from my scribble
books. A spiral notebook even lies open beside me when I drive an
open highway, and the Lord knows the meanings of the abbreviated
words I half-write to him."
A 1944 graduate of Greenville College, Dr. McAllaster received
both her master's degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois.
She taught at rural schools and at Seattle Pacific College before
returning to her alma mater in 1956 where she remained for 32 years
until her retirement in 1988. After retiring, Dr. McAllaster continued
to write poetry from her home in Greenville, Illinois until her
death in 1997.
