As a student, I witnessed first hand the impact of Dr. Elva McAllaster on the lives of others. Those of us who knew her poetic view of life will never be able to look at the trees on campus in the fall the same way as we did before hearing her description of this beautiful campus scene.

As an editor, in charge of producing an appropriate "In Memory" notice of her death in 1997 for the Greenville College alumni publication, THE RECORD, I revisited her life in articles, news releases and words from her colleagues. This project renewed my memories of her presence and her work as well as uncovered new elements of her life for which I was unaware.

During this process, I came across a 1987 newspaper article denoting Dr. Mac as the keynote speaker for a five-day writing conference at Moody Bible Institute. Her topic, "Writing as a Ministry," caught my attention, and, wishing I could have heard her speak on this subject, I contacted Moody to request a recording of these addresses. Although I believed this to be a long-shot, Moody was able to put me in touch with the company that archived the conference.

The tapes they provided, which felt like gold in my hands, were painstakingly transcribed and edited by my former public relations student assistant Sarah Thompson '01 with additional editorial assistance from my current assistant Miriam Fisher '02. In order for the reader to benefit not only from the content of her addresses, but from Dr. Mac's distinct communication style and vocabulary, these transcripts maintain the integrity of her original tone, words and phrases, with a few editorial changes made for flow and readbility between the five different addresses.

With the permission of her family, the transcripts from her "Writing as a Ministry" series are now packaged in the form of this eBook, also called Writing as a Ministry. It is my hope its readers will reap the benefits of its content along with the character of its author, Dr. Elva McAllaster.
