WinSCP Secure FTP Client

WinSCP is a secure FTP client, a software program needed to upload and download files to and from our new web server. You will need to download this file and install it on your computer before publishing to www.greenville.edu. A secure FTP client hides important information, such as username and password, during the information transmission process. Please do not use older, non-secure FTP clients, for your protection and ours.

Each faculty and administrative staff has been given permission to publish to a “files” directory located in each individual's web directory (either edu/faculty or edu/staff). Training sessions will be schedule over the next couple of weeks for those interested in learning more about this process.

If you have any questions about installing or using this program, contact Robyn Florian ( robyn.florian@greenville.edu or 664-6504).

Installing WinSCP

  1. Download the winscp350setup.zip file from http://helpdesk.greenville.edu/facresources/winscp.php . Save this on your Hard Drive. (I have an “Applications” folder I made under “My Documents” to which I save software downloads like this.)
  2. Double-click on the .zip file to open it, then double-click on the .exe file to begin installation.
  3. Continue through the following screens:
    1. Welcome > Click “Next.”
    2. License Agreement > Select “I accept the agreement” radio button and click “Next.”
    3. Select Destination Directory > It should say “C:\Program Files\WinSCP3.” Click “Next.”
    4. Select Components > Leave all checked and click “Next.”
    5. Select Start Menu Folder > It should say “WinSCP3.” Click “Next.”
    6. Select Additional Tasks > Choose whether you want a desktop icon or Quick Launch icon (appears in bar located at bottom of screen), or both. Deselect “Add upload shortcut to Explorer's ‘Send to' content menu.” Click “Next.”
    7. Initial User Settings > Select “Norton Command interface” radio button. Click “Next.”
    8. Ready to Install > Click “Install.”

Using WinSCP

The first time you start the program, use this information for the WinSCP Login screen:

Host Name: www.greenville.edu
Port Number: (Leave as 22)
Username: [Your Windows network username]
Password: [Your Windows network password]
Protocol: (Leave as is “SFTP (Allow SCP fallback)”)

IMPT: Click “Save” not “Login” so that this information will be saved and you won't have to enter it each time.

After you click “Save,” it will tell you that it will now save this session as [username]@greenville.edu. Click “Next.”

Now, when you open the WinSCP software, it will list the saved sessions, which should include your [username]@greenville.edu session name. Double-click on this name to open the session.

After logging in, you will be presented with two sets of files, one on the left and one on the right. The files on the left represent your hard drive, and will default to your “My Documents” directory. The files on the right represent the web server. You can drag and drop between your hard drive and your “files” directory in your faculty/staff directory on the website.
