General Development Information

GC Site Structure & Naming System

  • Web directories, also known as folders, have a standard naming system. Primarily, they use all lowercase names, without _ (underscores) or other symbols.

The Office of Internet Communications determines the names for primary directories. Web Development directories for Academics, Athletics and Faculty/Staff additional pages are as follows:

Academic Department "Additional Department Resources" Sites www.greenville.edu/academics/
    departments/nameofdepartment/resources.
    Athletic "Team (Year)" Sites www.greenville.edu/athletics/
    nameofsport/team(last two digits of year)
    Faculty Personal Pages www. greenville.edu/faculty/
    facultyname/personal
    Faculty-Sponsored Class Pages www. greenville.edu/faculty/
    facultyname/classname (i.e. com101)
    Faculty-Sponsored Organization Pages www. greenville.edu/faculty/
    facultyname/orgname (i.e. elpinice)
    Staff Personal Pages www.greenville.edu/staff/
    staffname/personal

Pages developed under these base directories may be named at the discretion of the creator.

  • Each directory should have an images or media folder to hold jpg, gif and other multimedia files.

  • Web document names require a page name and extension (i.e. index.shtml). Documents created using the GC template require a .shtml extension in order for the server to know to parse the file for the header and footer server-side includes.

  • Home pages, the main entry page for each directory, should be named index.htm (or .shtml, if using server-side includes)

STARs Assistance

The Greenville College Business Management Department received a grant from the James S. Kemper Foundation to develop the Kemper Instructional Technology Resource Center (ITRC) and the Student Technology Assistant Researchers (STARs) program that will serve the Greenville College faculty as a training resource and provide employment opportunities for students proficient in various IT software programs.

Under the direction of Deloy Cole, students selected as STARs will be assigned to an individual faculty member as a one-on-one trainer. Faculty may apply to use the services of a STAR for up to 4 hours per week for a training project.

Faculty may utilize the services of this program for training on web development. Visit the STARs website for additional information and STARs Request Form.
