Contributing to greenville.edu

Greenville College's online presence, greenville.edu, advances the mission of our school to Prospective Students, Current Students, Faculty & Staff, Parents, Alumni and Friends. Each major department is represented through academic, administrative and athletic pages.

A majority of greenville.edu pages are created and maintained by the Office of Internet Communications. This project also receives guidance from the Web Advisory Group and the Graphic Design Team.

Mission

To connect Greenville College and Prospective Students, Currents Students, Faculty & Staff, Parents, and Alumni & Friends through the use of Internet technology.

Why a Web Development Guide?

In an effort to present a consistent, accurate and usable site to Greenville College audiences, this WebWorks Development Guide was created in cooperation with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Admissions.

This working document is designed to assist faculty, staff and students with their web page needs. Along with standards for design, colors, and page location for greenville.edu web pages, this guide also provides page examples and content ideas for department and instructional resources and athletic team sites.

Request or Edit a GC WebDev Account

For faculty or staff interested in creating or maintaining additional department resources, athletic team pages, or instructional tools, please fill out the WebWorks Account Request form (http://www.greenville.edu/webworks/webdev/requestform.shtml) to initiate or edit your WebWorks account. This system will allow us to know who has access to what sections of the site.

If you desire a student to assist you with these tasks, please complete the "Request for Student Account" section of the WebWorks Account Request form. Any sections developed by students must be under the supervision of a faculty or staff member.

Review the GC WebWorks Development Guide

Please read the sections of this WebWorks Development Guide which pertain to your section(s) (academic vs. athletics) of the website. New pages need to comply with the standards listed before they can be linked from our site. You will also find helpful development tools and content ideas. A print version of the complete guide is available on our site.

Creating Web Pages on greenville.edu

In order to create web pages, you will need Macromedia Dreamweaver software as well as a basic knowledge of HTML (the code used to tell the browser how to construct the page), web graphics, and writing for the web. You will find a number of excellent sources of information and training on these and other areas in the Web Development Tools section of this guide.

We use Macromedia Dreamweaver as the web development program for greenville.edu. This program is available on the computers in the Kemper ITRC Lab. For those wishing to do extensive web development, contact Deloy Cole (dcole@greenville.edu or ext. 6822) about obtaining a copy of Dreamweaver for your computer.

We do not recommend the use of Netscape Composer or Microsoft FrontPage for web development. In each case, the proprietary coding produced works well with the corresponding browser (Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, respectively), but not as well with the competing browser. Macromedia products produce cleaner, cross-browser compatible code.

Saving & Editing with greenville.edu Pages

It is dangerously easy to publish web pages on greenville.edu. Due to the efforts of our Office of Information Technology, working with pages on our web server is as simple as working with documents saved on your hard drive.

  1. Map the P: drive on your computer to access your directory(s)
You will only need to do this once. After completing this step, you computer will automatically connect to the web server whenever you log in to Novell. You will see a "Www on 'Www\Beta\Website' (P:)" drive if you click on "My Computer."
  2. Open, Edit and Save your pages to this drive as you would your hard drive.

NOTE: Please make sure to log out of lab computers. If you do not, the next person to use that computer will have access to your web directory(s).
