The mission of Greenville College is…

• to transform students

• for lives of character and service

• through a Christ-centered education

• in the liberating arts and sciences.

In identity we are…

a Christian community committed to challenging and nurturing students. We are dedicated to excellence in higher education grounded in both the liberal arts tradition and a rich Wesleyan heritage. We provide an education characterized by open inquiry into all creation and guided by the authority of Scripture, tradition, reason and experience.

Greenville College was founded by the Free Methodist Church in 1892 and maintains a close voluntary affiliation even today. Yet the majority of our students represent around 40 other denominations. Greenville College is wholly owned and operated by the Board of Trustees. All employees act on behalf of the trustees to implement board policies.

All of the Greenville College programs operated by our employees are designed to assist in the process of transforming students. This means we are intentional about exposing students to real world problems, which helps them learn better how to serve. It also means we are intentional about stretching students out of their comfort zones while also nurturing them in order to help them grow in character. Therefore, our programs are not operated for their own sake, but must be continually evaluated for their effectiveness not only from a financial point of view but also against these essential goals. All employees serve as important role models for our students as they move through their young adult years into adulthood. So it is the expectation that our employees will maintain the highest professional standards in the performance of their work.

This Handbook contains expectations, standards, benefits, and procedures to assist staff and administrative staff to develop their own strengths as individuals and we hope by consequence, to reach maximum effectiveness in accomplishing our important shared work. It also includes regulations regarding working conditions, vacations, hours, and staff /College relations. If there are any questions related to these matters, I would urge you first to confer with your immediate supervisor, and if questions remain, then with the Vice President for Finance or his staff.

The distinctive mission of Greenville College makes it a special privilege to be a member of the College Community. For over a century, we have sought to provide a high quality education that is accessible even to some whose resources are limited. Consequently we ourselves often operate with limited resources. So it is important that all our employees see our work together as a calling and a ministry, not just a job. It is my hope that you will have a sense of personal fulfillment as you carry out your responsibilities as staff or administrative staff in helping the College accomplish its mission.

You are an important part of the College and your service is greatly appreciated. I would hope that you would feel free to take part in all of the activities of the College so that you will get to know students not only in your work, but at other times throughout the College year.

May God richly bless you in your work on behalf of our students.

Respectfully,

V. James Mannoia, Jr.
President
