The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, as amended, creates two major classifications: exempt and non-exempt personnel.
EXEMPT STAFF (Administrative Staff)
Because
of the nature of their work and hours Exempt employees are not required
to keep records of hours worked each day. However, a record of sick,
personal, and vacation days or other allowable absences are to be
submitted monthly to their supervisor for approval and then forwarded
to the Office of Payroll and Benefits. (Appendix C) Individuals classified as exempt will be notified in their letter of employment of this status.
NON-EXEMPT STAFF (Staff)
The
law requires that a record be kept of hours worked by day and by week
for non-exempt employees. The College furnishes a standard form for
this purpose. (Appendix D)
It is expected that each employee will maintain this form on a daily
basis. This form must be completed for each pay period, approved by the
supervisor, and forwarded to the Office of Payroll and Benefits.
EMPLOYMENT CATEGORIES
Employees are divided into the following categories:
Full-Time
Full-time
employees work at least 35 hours per week during the academic year.
They are eligible for benefits according to the terms and conditions of
the various benefit programs. Please refer to “Benefits – Full-Time
Employees”.
Part-Time
A
part-time employee works less than 35 hours per week. Part-time
employees are benefit eligible when they work at least 1000 hours
during a 12-month period. Please refer to “Benefits - Part-Time
Employees”. The law requires that a record be kept of hours worked by
day and by week for part-time employees. The College furnishes a
standard form for this purpose. (Appendix D-1)

Temporary
Temporary
employees work jobs of limited duration, up to six months and up to
37.5 hours per week, related to special projects, abnormal work loads,
emergencies, and other non-permanent situations. This includes adjuncts
and seasonal coaches. The law requires that a record be kept of hours
worked by day and by week for temporary employees. The College
furnishes a standard form for this purpose. (Appendix D-1)
It is expected that each employee will maintain this form on a daily
basis. This form must be completed for each pay period, approved by the
supervisor, and forwarded to the Office of Payroll and Benefits.
Temporary employees do not qualify for employee benefits, including pay
for holidays that may occur during their work period and service awards.
Retired
Retired
employees must have at least twenty (20) years equivalent full-time
service at Greenville College (See definition of full-time employee
above) or must be at least 60 years of age and have at least 10 years
equivalent full-time service at Greenville College . Please refer to
“Benefits - Retired Employees”.
Emeriti
Emeritus status is given to those who meet the following criteria:
- must have retired from Greenville College in good standing.
- must have at least 20 years of full-time service at Greenville College, or
- must be at least 60 years of age or have served 10 years equivalent full-time service at Greenville College .
- must
be nominated by their most recent supervisor and/or the Vice President
for Academic Affairs, with approval from the President. Acting upon
nominations received, emeritus status is granted by the Board of
Trustees. In the case of unusual circumstances, emeritus status may be
recommended by the President.
Student Workers
Student workers are not eligible for benefits.
